PREFACE

M ETABOLIC SYNDROME is characterized by a combination of health problems that facilitate accumulation of excessive fats around the waist area, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and elevated blood pressure and sugar. In other words, this condition is a bundle of risk factors that work against the general well-being of the body. As evident from its sparse definition, the syndrome is primarily denoted by unhealthy lifestyle choices such as being physically inactive, as well as the intake of more calories than one can utilize.

The word syndrome was derived from a Latin term that means to run together. The risk factors that together jointly represent metabolic syndrome are: obesity, hyperglycemia, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Other factors include insulin resistance, increase in uric acid, diabetes mellitus, abdominal obesity, over-clotting, and excessive parcels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

DEMOGRAPHICS AND FIGURES

Metabolic syndrome is widespread throughout the world and has been found to increase with age and higher BMI values. The occurrence of metabolic syndrome differs with race and ethnicity, and has shown different patterns for men and women. Studies estimate that 2025 percent of world populations are affected by metabolic syndrome.

A study conducted on a number of participants over 20 years of age showed that approximately 34 percent of adults have the risk factors often associated with metabolic syndrome. People in the age group of 4059 years of age were about three times as likely to develop the syndrome. Men who were 60 years of age or older were

IMPORTANCE OF A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

A comprehensive, in-depth approach to metabolic syndrome, such as the one followed in this book, is worthwhile due to the syndromes nature as a collective illness. Metabolic syndrome is firmly a case of a number of symptoms occurring together. Treatment for a standalone symptom or diet modification designed to treat any one of the associated conditions isnt going to be successful long-term; correction of the syndrome requires a deliberation of all the factors at work, and a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses all of the working parts. Such a comprehensive approach combines drug treatment along with exercise and diet modificationmuch like the syndrome it seeks to treat, any single modus operandi of treatment might not prove to be useful for all people with metabolic syndrome.

Before commencing with the chapters of this book, readers should note that, while the authors intention is to produce a book that is relatively easy to comprehend, there may be advanced terminology used on occasion where necessary. A glossary of terms has been provided in the back of the book on

Real Meaning of Metabolic Syndrome

T HE TERM metabolism comes from the Greek metabole, meaning change. Meta- is a Greek prefix meaning with, across, or after; in chemistry, it denotes change, reaction, and alteration. The suffix -ism comes from the Greek term isma, and is used to form nouns of action, state, condition, and doctrine. As a result, the combined meaning of the term metabolism is chemical occurrences, taking place within a living entity to sustain life. These processes include digestion and the transportation of nutrients into and in between cells.

The Theologus Autodidactus by Ibn Al-Nafis in the 13th century is arguably the first recorded use of the word metabolism. In his work, Al-Nafis discussed the idea that the body and its parts are in a constant state of flux. The study of these processes continues today in biochemistry, which is the in-depth investigation of the chemical reactions needed to sustain the life of an organism.

CLASSIFICATION AS SYNDROME

The term syndrome refers to a knot of symptoms that together constitute a single condition (as opposed to a disease, which is caused by pathogens). Microbes such as viruses arent always the cause of a disorder, and
