Introduction

To the Gut-Brain Connection

Out of the thousands of health books you could be reading right now, you picked the one with the cover portraying a smiling doctor in the produce section, holding raw carrots and beets and exposing a KALE T-shirt under his stethoscope and white coat. Which makes it safe to say, you are not the average person... and this is not your average gut-health manifesto. Your typical book will make recommendations about identifying and following the right diet, getting proper testing done, and treating imbalances in the human microbiome (a.k.a. the delicate ecosystem in your intestines affecting your digestion). These recommendations, when followed, will usually bring about a great improvement. But the results arent always lasting because, bottom line, these approaches dont get to the core of the issue. In this book, we will not only focus on the above factors, but we will also focus on the magic key to unlocking your gut health:

The gut-brain connection.

Gut-brain what? No way!

Except youre probably not reacting this way. The fact that youre reading this book tells me that youre already on the road to reclaiming your gut health because your mind is open to the all-important mind-body connection .

Yes! Your mind, heart, and spirit can influence your gut and your gut can influence your mind. Through your feelings and emotions, you can make yourself constipated, give yourself loose stools, inhibit your stomach acid production, block nutrient absorption, and shut down growth of your healthy gut bacteria. At the same time, if your microbiome is imbalanced, what is called dysbiotic bacteria can block your dopamine (i.e., your pleasure hormone) production and make you more stressed or anxious. (We will return to the subject of dysbiotic bacteria in Chapter 6.)

Even though I started my medical career as a traditional MD, the mind-body connection drew me to a holistic branch of the field called Functional Medicine. So why is this segment of the industry called Functional Medicine? Because if youve had any experience following a traditional medicine protocol, youve probably experienced some dys function.

Functional Medicine has been created in response to that generalized dysfunction and it has many different definitions. But as youll see, I like to keep things very simple. As a Family Medicine practitioner (a.k.a. general practitioner or G.P.), I was taught to observe your symptoms and determine which medication would improve them. However, in my training as a Functional Medicine practitioner, I was taught to not only understand your symptoms, but to listen to you and your story and in working together, we identify, typically through lab testing, what led to your symptoms. Once we pinpoint what is underlying your symptoms, we create a treatment plan to help you eliminate from your life whatever is making you sick. So as a Functional Medicine practitioner, I dont give you a medication to make you feel betterI give you the tools and a prescription plan to fix any underlying imbalances, and in doing so help you increase your energy, reduce your stress, feel better, and heal naturally.
