ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY BOOKS
The Royal Asiatic Society was founded in 1823 for the investigation of subjects connected with, and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to, Asia. Informed by these goals, the policy of the Societys Editorial Board is to make available in appropriate formats the results of original research in the humanities and social sciences having to do with Asia, defined in the broadest geographical and cultural sense and up to the present day.

Acknowledgements
This study has been made possible by the support and co-operation of many in Iran and Britain and I should like to express my gratitude to them. Above all I must thank the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education of the Islamic Republic of Iran which, by the granting of a scholarship, made it possible to do the research in Iran (19881990) and in Britain (19921997). I would like to thank my supervisors, Professor F. C. R. Robinson for his invaluable comments and Dr. V. Martin whose valuable suggestions and corrections have improved this work.
My thanks go to directors, archivists and librarians at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Iran National Archives Organization, the Awqf Organization at Bbul in Mzandarn, the Central Library of Tehran University, Malik Library, the Centre of the Great Encyclopaedia of Islam, in Iran, and the Public Records Office, the India Office, the Library of Royal Holloway College, and the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies which made my access to source materials possible.
I must also thank Messrs A. Amr Mukhtr, the late A. Itimd, M. J. Kazembeyki and M. Q. Shahryr pr who gave me access to the documents and materials belonging to their houses.
