Spotlight on the Past: 1922, 1947, 1972,
1997
We are pleased to welcome you to Chases Calendar of Events 2022 , the 65th edition of this publication. Chases was first published by brothers William D. and Harrison Chase on Dec 4, 1957, as a 32-page pamphlet with 364 entries, meant to be, as Bill Chase said, A reliable guide to known events of the forthcoming year [1958]. That first edition was enthusiastically embraced by libraries, teachers, newspapers, late-night television hosts, broadcasters and planners in almost every conceivable branch of human activity, from hospitals and nursing homes to charitable organizations to federal government agencies and officials. Not to mention the general public.
In 1958, the US Chamber of Commerce invited the Chases to incorporate their publication, Special Days, Weeks and Months , which listed commercial promotions. The content grew and matured to have an international scope. In 1987, celebrity birthdays were addeda popular feature. Through the years, the extended Chases clan had helped prepare each edition, among them Helen Chase, wife of William, and their children. Harrison retired from the book in 1969, and the rest of the Chases retired in 1987 but remained consultants and treasured resources to the current Chases staff based in Chicago, IL. Harrison passed away in 2000, Helen in 2009 and we lost Bill Chase on Mar 2, 2020.
Today, Chases is a combination book/searchable website with 12,500 entries in a range of subject areasplus exhaustive appendices. All entries are updated and thoroughly fact-checked, making Chases the most respected and comprehensive reference available on holidays, special events, international days of celebration, federal and state observances, historic and birth anniversaries and special days, weeks and months. Chases strives to deliver interesting facts every day of the year.

Were very grateful to be publishing this year of 2022 after the COVID-19 pandemic began its devastations in 2020 and continued into 2021. The virus continues to cause cancellations and postponements at press time now, so some favorite listings may not appear in the 2022 edition or may only have tentative dates. Always use the contact information for an event to finalize plans.
Nonetheless 2022 has much to celebrate and commemorate. It is the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculturesponsored by the United Nations and the FAO. Types of Entries in Chases Calendar of Events
Astronomical Phenomena
Information about eclipses, equinoxes and solstices, moon phases and other astronomical phenomena is calculated from data prepared by the US Naval Observatory and Her Majestys Nautical Almanac Office. Please note: In Chases, Universal Time has been converted to Eastern Time.
Religious Observances
Principal observances of the Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Bahai faiths are presented with background information from their respective calendars. We include anticipated dates for Muslim holidays. When known, religious events of China, Japan and India are also listed. There is no single Hindu calendar and different sects define the Hindu lunar month differently. There is no single lunar calendar that serves as a model for all Buddhists, either. Therefore, we are not able to provide the dates of many religious holidays for these faiths.
National and International Observances and Civic Holidays
Chases features independence days, national days and public holidays from around the world. Technically, there are no national holidays in the US: holidays proclaimed by the president only apply to federal employees and to the District of Columbia. State governors proclaim holidays for their states. In practice, federal holidays are usually proclaimed by governors as well. Some governors proclaim commemorative days that are unique to their state.
