Josh Dorfmans perspective is a leading voice for anyone involved in new consumer-based environmentalism.?Tom Arnold, TerraPass
We cant all camp out in old-growth forests, lying down in front of the bulldozers. And its not only that were too busy: Some of us just dont want our fabulous threads to get caked with mud.
But that doesnt mean we dont care passionately about the environment. Luckily, the days when becoming environmentally aware entailed eating bread that tasted like dirt, wearing clothes that looked like frayed burlap sacks, and spending summer vacations assailing whaling ships with Greenpeace are passing away. It is now perfectly possible (and increasingly easy) to be well fed, well coiffed, well dressed, and well traveled while remaining deeply committed to an ecologically sustainable lifestyle.
In The Lazy Environmentalist, Josh Dorfmanhost of the Sirius Satellite Radio program of the same nameprovides comprehensive guidance to fashion-forward consumers who are as concerned about the long-term health of our planet as they are about the design of their bathroom fixtures. Covering topics that range from clothing to electronic gadgetry, home decor to recreation, and gardening to financial investment, Dorfman lets us know which trends to watch and which eco-conscious productscars, toothbrushes, cell phones, pet accessoriesto buy. Green, it turns out, can be an extremely stylish color.
Every day most of us have to choose between products that either look the same or do the same thing. So why not buy the product that causes the least harm to the planet? The Lazy Environmentalist is a useful guide toward making the right decisions.
- Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner, Patagonia, Inc.
Everything you always wanted to know about greener living but were afraid to spend the rest of your life researching. Heres a great start.
- Chris Paine, writer and director, Who Killed the Electric Car?
Instead of thinking about it ... DO IT. Buy this amazing book and get the scoop on products and ways to take care of this great planet. Become part of the movement that is loving the earth the way it truly deserves to be cared for!?
-Mariel Hemingway, actress and author of Healthy Living from the Inside Out

Forward-thinking designers around the globe are merging fashion with - photo 3
Forward-thinking designers around the globe are merging fashion with eco-awareness, creating sexy, chic apparel that supports a cleaner planet. Global brands like Levis are creating eco-conscious apparel alongside visionary eco-fashion designers like Linda Loudermilk and Deborah Lindquist. Wal-Mart, the worlds largest retailer, is touting organic clothing alongside eco-design boutiques like The Green Loop near Portland, Oregon, and Gomi NYC on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Bono, U2s indefatigable front man, is a leading voice for the eco-fashion crusade through his Edun line, and the movement is creating its own rising stars like eco-fashion model, spokesperson, and industry expert Summer Rayne Oakes. Eco-fashion may not change the planet, but it will certainly change your look. Indeed, doing good never looked as good as it does today.
The shift toward eco-conscious apparel mirrors the rising popularity of organic foods. Just as we choose to put healthier foods inside our bodies, today we can also choose to put healthier clothing on our bodies. Conventionally grown cotton, for example, is one of the most heavily sprayed crops in the world, accounting for nearly 25 percent of all insecticides and 10 percent of all pesticides used worldwidewhich rely on hazardous chemicals that are suspected or known to be carcinogenic by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The chemicals remain in the fiber of the clothing, which leaves the wearer susceptible to toxicity. Opting for nontoxic, organically grown apparel is the healthiest choice, for both you and the planet. Chemicals from clothing can not only seep into the human body, but also contaminate groundwater, soil, air, and food supplies.
Organic cotton is at its finest when under the skillful hands of designers Karen Stewart and Howard Brown. The couple was inspired to develop their Stewart+Brown label after the birth of their daughter, and their designs succeed in mixing style and eco-consciousness with serious comfort. Rich, subtle details can be seen in camis and long-sleeve shirts, plunging V-neck and scoop-neck sweaters, and hoodies and jackets. Every Stewart+Brown design uses organic cotton, factory surplus materials, or Mongolian cashmerestraight from a co-op in northwestern Mongolia that helps to ensure the nomadic herders survival and maintain their traditional way of life.
Jeans are also receiving an eco-makeover. Organic cotton denim collections by eco-fashion newcomer Del Forte, longtime eco-label Of The Earth, and original denim pioneer Levi Strauss are creating attractive options for greening your wardrobe staples. But its Loomstate that has elevated denim to new heights with the launch of its eco-intelligent label in 2004. Under the talented hands of designer Rogan Gregoryalso widely renowned for Rogan, his namesake fashion labelLoomstate provides a wide collection of low-slung distressed jeans for men and women, weaving each item with raw organic cotton yarn in homage to nineteenth-century manufacturing methods. The rapidly expanding collection also features organic cotton chinos and corduroys along with designer T-shirts and hoodies. The New York Citybased clothing label is sharply focused on ecological principles, yet knows firsthand what it takes to create a successful fashion label. According to co-founder Scott Hahn, It [Loomstate] ultimately has to be cool. Its got to have sex appeal. Its got to be street credible. Were really going after people who are pretty discerning about what theyre wearing. Pushing the eco-envelope still further, Gregory and Hahn have teamed up with Ali Hewson and husband Bono to introduce the Edun fashion label, which emphasizes fair-trade wages with an emphasis on manufacturing in Africa and strives to integrate Earth-friendly materials.
