PREFACE
Islamic banking and economics (IBE) is a fast growing subject of interest both in the East and West. It is a very specialised cross disciplinary field involving economics, business, marketing, religion, philosophy, law, culture, etc. It is an onerous task for any researcher or professional to acquire the information on IBE without having to go through several secondary sources, such as indexing and abstracting services.
Because of the unique nature of this discipline, this book intends to examine and focus on various aspects of information on IBE. A simple bibliographical compilation would not help the readers. It is important in this electronic age of information to discuss various sources of information reporting research findings and to highlight the various forms of information available for consultation of researchers. A quick look in reveals that there is a good balance of reported IBE information on both theoretical and practical aspects. There are more than 100 doctoral dissertations and theses accepted on IBE in various Western universities and a good number of theoretical articles on economics and banking aspects have been reported. This indicates the healthy interest in this emerging discipline. A discipline is judged on the basis of its theoretical foundation, and without a good theoretical foundation, the discipline will not become a profession, but rather a trade.
This book is arranged in five chapters. to discuss trends in IBE literature.
The first chapter describes the overall structure of IBE information and its resources. The materials covered include monographs, articles, conference proceedings, notes, and dissertations. The chapter focuses on authorship patterns, such as single authorship versus multiple authorship; and total output of IBE information for the decade, and the year 1990. Also provided is a literature review of relevant studies on IBE.
The second chapter is by Imtiaz Pervez. His article provides a comprehensive picture of Islamic banking and its practice within the framework of Western banks in the Islamic World. He has discussed the nature of Islamic banks and finance system and has highlighted many issues and problems facing them. He has provided a number of examples, where possible, as well as definitions and explanations for many terms that are used in Islamic banking and finance system.
The third chapter analyses and discusses the journal literature on IBE. It provides a list of 223 journals which have published articles on IBE literature along with their country code and International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). Also provided a list of recommended journals on IBE literature to be considered for subscription by librarians or information specialists.
The fourth chapter deals with the results of using twenty electronic databases. Analysis of data retrieved has been discussed with regard to their types of coverage, overlapping, and the number of items retrieved by each database. Various on-line host services and their scope have been outlined. A detailed list of various on-line and CD-ROM databases pertaining to banking and economics along with their description has also been provided.
The fifth chapter is a list of information sources (Bibliography) on IBE. A total of 1576 items were identified between 1980 to 1992. The main concentration is from 1980 to 1990 with some 1991 and 1992 data included. Entries are arranged by a special classification scheme specifically designed by the authors for the arrangement of IBE information sources. A comprehensive author index and a keyword subject index for important terms along with classification entry number is provided at the end of ..
A majority of the items included in this chapter (bibliography) are in the English language. Arabic, French, German, Persian, Turkish and other language items are also included. However, due to the absence of good indexing and abstracting services, especially in Third World Countries, it was not possible to include the journal articles in other languages comprehensively. Therefore, the main concentration for foreign language items were the monographic material. Foreign language items are in transliterated (romanised) form according to the Library of Congress transliteration format.
All the items have been carefully verified with regard to their authenticity. Only published items have been included in the bibliography. Unpublished and mimeographed material has been excluded. The advantage of this is that the items covered can be purchased or can be obtained through photocopying or interlibrary loan services.
This book is intended to guide all researchers, professionals and any others who need to find information on IBE and other related areas. It is an attempt to provide, for the first time, not only the bibliography, but the information infrastructure of the IBE discipline.

INFORMATION ON ISLAMIC BANKING AND ECONOMICS:
an overview
The interest in Islamic Banking is becoming popular, as evidenced by the articles published in the latest issue of Newsweek magazine (special issue April 26, 1993). The success behind these banks is the demand and the attitude of Muslims towards investments and finding ways to invest their funds according to the Islamic faith. As a result of their religious beliefs, there are over two hundred Islamic banks and Islamic funds now being operated successfully throughout the world. Persons interested in Islamic Banking have the opportunity of consulting several Islamic Bank directories like Presley (1988); IRTI (1992); AMBD (1993). Besides the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) which includes members from 45 countries, there are three large Islamic finance groups: Dar Al-Maal Al-Islami (DMI), Dallah Albaraka Group, and Al-Rajhi Banking and Investment Corporation. By and large, these groups are the major share holders of many Islamic banks in the Middle East. The terminology used in Islamic banking and financial transaction are different from those used in conventional banks (Khuri 1987,
