Finally backyard farmers who want to keep a few hens for eggs have a bible thats attractive enough to leave out on the coffee table, and inexpensive enough to purchase on a whim. This comprehensive guide, written in charming prose from the perspective of an organic farmer, will appeal to readers who are interested in raising chickens, or simply want the best knowledge about how to cook them. With this in mind, farmer and animal expert Jennifer Megyesi discusses all the basic details of raising the birdsgeneral biology, health, food, choosing breeds, and so onand she cuts through the smoke to identify what terms like organic, free-range, and so on really mean for poultry farmers and consumers. No chicken book would be complete without information on how to show chickens for prizes, and this is no different, but The Joy of Keeping Chickens also stresses the importance of self-sustainability and organic living, and the satisfaction of keeping heirloom breeds. Readers will appreciate the comprehensive nature of this readable, informative guide, and Megyesis enthusiasm about keeping chickens. Coupled with Geoff Hansens gorgeous full-color photographs, this text makes for an instant classic in the category.

Acknowledgments

There are many humans that I would like to thank for helping me write of personal experiences with my favorite barnyard creatures, chickens. My parents understood that it was far easier for me to relate to the antics of the chickens as a troubled teenager than to attempt to fit in with the beautiful people at school, whom I envied but did not understand. My husband has indulged me with countless pets who have done nothing more than cheer me at their sight, not even required to contribute an egg or a drumstick to the farm to ensure their continued existence. My sisters both encouraged me to pursue writing, and Anna, especially, provided me with more than just ideas for some of my anecdotes.

I thank those who patiently pored over these pages, especially Ann Treistman, an editor who allowed me to complete this project despite being occupied with lambing, haying, and the growing season, and Jane Crosen, whose insightful comments helped me immensely. Geoff Hansen, thank you for suggesting this project, and thanks, too, for allowing me to be associated with your incredible art.

And to the chickens: to Taurus, Funny Face, Fern, Bright Eyes, Pica Pica, Wendell Berry, Forest Gump, Peggy, Danny, Henry, Juan Carlos Domingues, Poopie Poo, and House Hen. Thank you for reminding me that were all part of the same book, and that Im just one small part in the chapter.

Jennifer Megyesi

Im very thankful to those who allowed me to spend time photographing the various ways to keep chickens: Karl Hanson and Clo Milek, Jennifer Hauck and Alex Cherington, Suzanne Long and Tim Sanford, Ralph and Cindy Persons, Brianne Riley and Matthew Taylor, Rick Schluntz and Carol Steingress, Ray Williams and Liz York, and the Northeast Poultry Congress organizers and participants. Im especially grateful for working with Jennifer Megyesi, who was always helpful with suggestions and was a great collaborator on this book. Thanks to the crew at Skyhorse Publishing, including Ann Treistman, Abigail Gehring and LeAnna Weller Smith, who put all of the pieces together into one special book.
