We know about some of coconut oilsbenefits from studying Pacific Islanders, for whom using coconut oil is a wayof life. Research shows that the islander populations are relatively devoid ofissues such as kidney disease, high cholesterol, and obesity issues we havecome to accept as only being cured by pharmaceuticals. Yet regular consumptionof coconut oil has shown that in fact, the opposite is true.
Coconut oil is easy to eat and digest. Infact, ingesting coconut oil can be very cleansing to the colon. Coconut oilalso helps to dissolve and remove toxins from the body. This helps those who consumeit to maintain ideal and healthy body weights.
Its no secret that many people in ourculture have an overgrowth of yeast in their bodies, which leads to many healthissues. According to the editors of PureHealthMD, a site which has grown out ofthe Discovery Channels Health network, an imbalance of yeast in the body knownas dysbiosis may be associated with conditions such as fibromyalgia, irritablebowel, chronic fatigue, brain fog, chronic immune suppression, chronic sinusissues, skin rashes or infections, acne, joint aches and depression.(health.howstuffworks.com, 2012)
Coconut oil is a natural anti-yeasttreatment, thanks to some of its natural acids. It can kill fungi and yeaststhat cause ringworm, athlete's foot, thrush, and diaper rash. Several peoplewith candida yeast infections have shared their testimonies on the internetabout how coconut oil has turned the tables on the infection. Its also one ofthe more affordable treatments on the market.
In addition to being a powerfulyeast-killer, coconut oil is also an antibacterial agent. Whether were talkingabout minor maladies or severe infections, none of it stands a chance againstthe medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil. Studies have shown that coconutoil can successfully overpower viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, hepatitis C, SARS, AIDS and more. It also kills bacteria that causeafflictions such as ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, gumdisease and cavities, pneumonia, and gonorrhea. And did I mention that it alsokills tapeworms, lice, giardia, and other types of parasites?
If this is all sounding too good to betrue, just run a quick internet search and youll see that coconut oil really isjust about as perfect as it gets. You can eat it raw, or you can use it incooking. Itll soften your skin and hair, and it can fight yeast and bacteriabetter than any antibiotic on the shelf. Even if you take just a few tablespoonsa day, it will still be one of the best things you can do for your health.
Keep reading, and lets get into the moreadvanced aspects of coconut oil.
Why Coconut Oil?
Youve probably heard at least some of theexcitement about the benefits of coconut oil, and hopefully the introduction confirmedsome of that hype and introduced you to benefits you werent already aware of.However, those of you who still arent convinced might be wondering, Whatmakes coconut oil so special?
Thats an excellent question. Thedifference between coconut oil and the other cures on the market is that thisone has a long-standing history. A quick search on the internet will provideall the evidence you need. Youll find works like this book, as well astestimonies by people who have used coconut oil and loved it. There arehundreds of stories and personal accounts of how coconut oil has improved thehealth of individuals just like you. This is a multi-purpose oil that canchange your life in a few days and that, my friend, is a completelyhype-free statement.
What is It?
In technical terms, coconut oil is extractedfrom the cocos nucifera, or the coconut palm tree. Basically, the oil istaken from the meat, which is the solid part of a ripe coconut.
There are different types of coconut oilyou should be familiar with. The knowledge will help you decide which type (ortypes) is best for you to use. In some cases, you may want to purchase morethan one type for different purposes.
Refined Coconut Oil
Refined coconut oil has been processed. Youmay prefer refined coconut oil for cooking, as the flavor is more subtle andthe oil can withstand higher cooking temperatures. Note that the refiningprocess can involve the use of harsh chemicals, and frequently refined coconutoils are actually RBD oils refined, bleached and deodorized. I definitelyrecommend grabbing unrefined coconut oil as well, to ingest raw. If you are planningon cooking and need an oil with a mild flavor and a high smoke point, refinedcoconut oil may be a good option for you. Additionally, it is the most widelyavailable coconut oil.
Some refining processes are better thanothers, so pay close attention to where you buy your refined coconut oil. Makesure youre not getting something thats been refined through a process youdont agree with. While chemically refined coconut oil is NOT what you want, there are healthier refined alternatives. Some coconut oil is refined usingdiatomaceous earth or steam. Read the label carefully before making a purchase.
UnrefinedCoconut Oil
Unrefined coconut oil is as close tonature as it gets - short of cracking open your own coconuts. This is pressed rawcoconut. Look for virgin, extra-virgin or unrefined on the label.
Note that unrefined oils are sometimesstrong and can overpower foods when you cook with them. I recommend takingunrefined oils in raw form, and saving the refined coconut oil for cooking.
I prefer to research the brand before Ibuy. This is to determine whether or not
I agree with their method of extracting coconut oil. The majority of unrefinedcoconut oil manufacturers avoid the use of chemicals, but there are exceptions.
