Introduction: The Trials of aBeauty Editor
At the age of ten, Ireceived my first makeup kit: a purse-sized collection of bronzeshades from Coty. It was to play with, of course, not to wear, butI felt glamorous and grown up. At twenty, I was giving unsolicitedbeauty advice to my sorority sisters with the certainty that canonly come from youth and inexperience. At twenty-two, I was abeauty editor. I spent my days doing what Id always done, readingup on the latest beauty trends, collecting beauty tips, and playingwith makeup. But now it was not simply a means of blowing offhomework. It was my job. When the first big box of beauty bootyarrived, I dived in with the abandon of a true addict .
That was yearsago. Since then, Ive rubbed and scrubbed, tried and tested my waythrough thousands of products. I have interviewed hundreds ofbeauty experts and endured countless treatments. Ive been a humanguinea pig, submitting my face, my hair, and my body to endlesspoking, prodding, rubbing, and tugging, all for the cause ofbeauty. Along the way, Ive discovered duds and dream products, failures and finds. All of this trial and error has made me onepicky beauty fanatic. As tempting as a revolutionary new skintreatment may seem, I need more than miraculous claims to be sold.I need evidence. So I read the fine print and speak to the experts. Most important, I try it for myself, because a treatment is onlyfabulous if it works.
Through it all,Ive retained my fascination with beauty. My heart still leaps whenI hear about the latest miracle skin-saving ingredient or learnthat a certain admired celeb attributes her glow to a particularshade of blush. Ive remained a beauty consumer first, an editorsecond.
This book is written for consumers, not experts, and a lthough its simpleand straightforward, its not for everyone.
Theres a small percentage of women who have mastered their makeupand skincare routines. Their look is beautiful, flattering, andsuits their lifestyle. They are open to change without being aslave to trends. They have developed an effective skincare program, which they adjust seasonally. They skim fashion magazines forinformation on advances in skincare and the latest makeup looks, and pick and choose only what works for them.
I dont know anyof these women.
This isfor the rest of us. If you fall, even loosely, into one of thefollowing categories, then youve come to the rightplace.
If loving beautyis wrong, I dont wanna be right.

Other times, as in theunfortunate orange-lipstick incident, the results of yourexperimentation are less than impressive. This book will encouragethat spirit of creativity while helping you zero in on potentialpitfalls.
