Foreword
Lois Magner's A History of Medicine is a welcome addition to the literature of medical history. There has long been a need for a good English-language textbook of the history of medicine. Existing works that cover the subject are out of print and/or inadequate for the purposes of undergraduate instruction. For example, Garrison's History of Medicine is dated (having last been revised in 1928) and more of an encyclopedic reference work than a textbook. Ackerknecht's Short History of Medicine, although a well-written and perceptive book, is too brief to provide more than superficial coverage of its subject, especially in the period after 1800.
That Dr. Magner's text will find a ready audience is suggested by a recent report of the Education Committee of the American Association for the History of Medicine. Of 152 history of medicine courses identified in a survey of undergraduate instruction in American and Canadian universities, some 65% were either Western surveys or courses devoted to Western topics. Professor Magner's book could well serve as an appropriate main text or supplementary reading for these and other medical history courses.
A History of Medicine is carefully researched and eminently readable. Dr. Magner has managed to condense thousands of years of medical history into a cohesive and interesting account, making excellent use of case studies (e.g., of a disease such as syphilis) to represent broader issues and trends. Although focusing largely on Western medicine, Dr. Magner devotes significant attention to developments in the Near and Far East. Her sense of humor, reflected throughout the work, is refreshingly

unusual in a textbook. I recommend this book with enthusiasm to anyone interested in a general introduction to the history of medicine.

Preface
Many changes have taken place in the history of medicine since 1940 when Henry E. Sigerist called for a new direction in the field, a move away from the study of the great physicians and their texts towards a new concept of medical history as social and cultural history. New theories and methods evolved as scholars raised new questions about patients, healers, institutions, economics, race, gender, etc. Some arguments about the nature of the field remain, but there certainly is general agreement that medical history is not simply an account of the path from past darkness to modern scientific enlightenment. Given the vitality, diversity, and growing tendency to specialization characteristic of the field today, finding a way to present all of these aspects of the history of medicine in a one-volume introductory text has probably become an impossible mission. Yet most teachers will acknowledge the need for books aimed at a general audience to introduce beginners to the field, including some aspects of recent developments in the biomedical sciences. Thus, a selective approach based on a consideration of the needs and interests of readers who are first approaching the field seems appropriate.
