I am deeply indebted to three individuals who made this book possible:
Hollywood screenwriter Doran William Cannon, my mentor, who introduced me to his story structure theories and then talked me into perfecting and teaching them;
Wendy Peterson, whose careful editing and thoughtful contributions helped me introduce more than 10,000 students to the wonders of story structure;
and Loren Barrows, whose enthusiasm and creativity resulted in both my best online course and this book, which owes much to her thoughtful collaboration.
First Aid for Your Novel
Chapter
Lets make a bet. No, lets make two bets.
First, I bet youve started a novel, gotten a ways into it and then gotten stuck because you couldnt figure out where it was going.
Am I right? If so, how did I know? Its because thats happened to nearly all authors, especially when theyre first getting started.
Its frustrating, isnt it?
Fortunately theres a great solution! The structuring techniques Ill show you in this book will guarantee you know where youre going before you even start. And that makes finishing so much easier.
Okay, heres my second bet: I bet youve written something you felt passionate about, but when you looked at it later it seemed flat and uninteresting.
That was an easy bet, because weve probably all done it. This book will show you how to fix that dull prose, and turn it into something big and wonderful, something that flows well and excites your readers.
If youve already started a novel, then as you read this book youre going to want to apply each technique to your existing material, and often Im sure youll find the improvements amazing.
If you havent yet started a novel, congratulations! Youre in the ideal position, because you can start with a clean slate and put together a perfect plan. That will save you an incredible amount of timeand several major revisions.
So how did I do on my bets? Have you gotten stuck, or become disenchanted in the past? In either case, this book will fix that problem. Itll provide the first aid your novel needs in order to achieve your goal: publication. And Ill even have some tips to help you get into print.
Oh, and heres one final bet: I bet that by the time you reach the end of this book youll be amazed how many new tools youve learned that will make your writing the best it can be. Now thats a bet that cant be beat!
As youve probably figured out if this book had a covermy name is Steve Alcorn. Im a theme park designer, author and teacher. I have half a dozen novels and non-fiction books in print.
I meet a lot of aspiring authors. In fact, during the past decade Ive taught more than 10,000 of them through the online learning programs of more than 1500 colleges and universities worldwide. You can find a list of my classes at writingacademy.com. Many of my former students are now in print, and if you apply the techniques in this bookalong with a healthy dose of hard workyou can get into print, too.
One of the things I love about teaching is sharing snippets of my favorite novels. I hope that some of them are your favorites too, and that youll discover many more that youd like to read. After all, if youre going to be a successful novelist, you need to understand the market, and the best way to do that is to read lots of wonderful books.
The best way to learn is by trying out new techniques for yourself, so Ive included lots of exercises I call Test Drives. I hope youll take advantage of them to really firm up your knowledge of all the new techniques Ill introduce.
Youve almost certainly encountered some of the concepts in this book, but Ill be presenting each concept in new ways, so be prepared to discover many nuances of these techniques that will be perfect for applying to your own work.
Each chapter focuses on one of these techniques, from planning your plot to polishing your prose (wow, check out that alliteration!).
