"To those who know him, Norm Hackerman is famous because he seems to know everything, and because he can do several jobs simultaneously better than most of us can do one job. But Hackerman is especially known for his straight talk and "telling it like it is." Conversations is quintessential Hackermanin a short book he and Ashworth take the reader from the beginning of science to modern times, all the while cutting through the fog and baloney about science and technology that often make it seem beyond the reach of the average person. This enjoyable book should be required reading for those politicians and others who would question the value of science and technology to modern society and the future of our planet."
Richard S. Nicholson, Executive Officer, American Association for the Advancement of Science

"An issue of great importance to the country has been steadily emerging concerning the strength of the federal support for science and technology, particularly in basic and applied research. Conversations on the Uses of Science and Technology goes right to the heart of the issue in addressing the uses of science and technology. And what an interesting and informative approach it isinteresting because of the easy-to-read, platonic dialogue used by the authors, informative because of the authors' combined experience and knowledge of scientific and

technologic activities in universities, industries, and government, at both the professional practice and the policy levels, for example, Norman Hackerman's two term Chairmanship of the National Science Board. The central issue is attractively enhanced by a description in lay terms of the nature of science and technology, and the characteristic activities of research and development.
Conversations is recommended reading for anyone and everyone with an interest in the health of science and technologystudents, professors, researchers, administrators in the universities, members of Congress and leaders of the Administration, as well as interested members of the voting public."
H. Guyford Stever, Former Director, National Science Foundation

"This wonderful and timely book is pure Norman Hackerman. Dr. Hackerman has as many credentials to talk about the importance of science and science policy as any person alive today.
He makes the case for basic research and education without falling into the usual arguments and clichs. These gentlemen will educate anyone, whether technically competent or not. This book will influence politicians and policy makers in governments and universities."
Herbert D. Doan, Retired President, The Dow Chemical Company

Foreword
If you like listening to an interesting and exciting conversation between two knowledgeable and literate individuals, you will enjoy the dialogue between Norman Hackerman and Kenneth Ashworth. The conversation has all of the hesitancy, groping for words and phrases and concepts, that typifies casual conversation. The dialogue is a very personal exposition of Norman Hackerman's views of science, technology and its interaction with education and general public policy. In his inimitable way, Dr. Hackerman communicates the great wisdom about such matters for which he is well known. Some of his personal views on science, technology and society are at variance with some of the more widely expressed mainstream views.
