This course first appeared in 1996 and has undergone numerous reprintings since then. This is the third revised edition. From the outset Colloquial Dutch gained a loyal following all over the world. The author has received countless emails and letters from enthusiastic readers, many offering positive criticism for future editions. Many of those recommendations have been applied, but as the reaction to the book has been so overwhelmingly positive and suggestions for changes so relatively few in number and minor in nature, this third edition does not differ greatly from the second. The main changes, apart from small typographical corrections, relate to the updating of the cultural information in the book, as much has changed in Dutch society over the intervening years. It is hoped that by keeping the book up to date by means of this new edition, it will continue to enjoy the sort of support it has enjoyed to date.
