FOREWORD
As a medical oncologist, I have the privilege and responsibility of interacting with people during one of the most important events in their lives: a new diagnosis of cancer. Their reactions and concerns are as diverse as they are, but some approaches remain common to everyone facing this challenge. Initial questions focus around three major areas:
Prognosis: Can I be cured? Will I need to learn to live with this disease as a chronic illness? Will I die from it?
Treatment: Whats the treatment plan for my disease? How will that treatment impact my life, work, family, and friends?
My Role: What can I do, beyond the role of patient, to help in the treatment of my disease?
Samantha Harris addresses that third question in great depth in this book.
She and I met in 2014 when, as a host for Entertainment Tonight, she interviewed me about Living Proof, a made-for-TV movie starring Harry Connick Jr., playing me, that tells the story of the making of a new breast cancer drug. At that time, I had been doing basic research and clinically practicing medical oncology for some 25 years, and my lab helped discover HER2-positive breast cancer, an important subset of the disease, and also helped in developing Herceptin, a new targeted therapy to treat it.
During our conversation, Samantha shared that she had just faced the challenge of a new breast cancer diagnosis herself. After I discussed the work that my lab had been doing and she told me about her own case, she entrusted her care to my clinic. Her drive, sharp intellect, and intense interest in doing everything she could to improve her health and play an active role in the treatment of her disease struck me immediately. She read about breast cancer voraciously and always asked insightful questions about her case and her treatment plan. She also asked a lot about other subtypes of the disease and about cancer and cancer care in general. She was extremely inquisitive, consistently well-informed, and always dynamically engaged.
