Dedicated to

Todd Merritt

During my lifetime, I have had the opportunity to meet some pretty amazing men and women: President Jimmy Carter, Muhammad Ali, Magnus Ver Magnusson, Ron Rice, Donald Trump, Leo Buscaglia, Branch B. Rickey III, Stephen Hawking, and the Dalai Lama, to name a few. I am sure you are familiar with all the aforementioned, but one of my greatest heroes is an individual you have probably never heard of, although he is a former world-class athlete. His name is Todd Merritt.

To be quite candid, the reason I admire Todd so much has little to do with his athletic prowess. His character and personality transcend anything he has ever accomplished in the athletic area, which is considerable. Simply put, Todd is a magnificent human being. He is one of the most loving and giving people you could ever imagine. Everyone who knows Todd loves him. Very few people have impacted my life as much as Todd. He has been a tremendous inspiration to me and is one of my greatest role models.

Ben Lockett

There is no doubt in my mind that if it wasnt for Ben Lockett, I wouldnt have achieved a tenth of what I have in the sport of powerlifting. When he started coaching me, I was at best a poor imitation of a powerlifter. Ben took me, an insecure kid with a body that looked like a broomstick, and transformed me into a world-class athlete. A world-class lifter himself, Ben sacrificed a large part of his career to ensure my success. I know of few athletes who would be so selfless. Without question, Ben Lockett is the best thing that ever happened to me in the sport of powerlifting.

Larry Valis

I cant write an epic poem or paint a magnum opus, but if I could, I would construct those works of art in honor of Larry Valis. I have known Larry for most of my life and I can attest to his magnificent character and spirit. He is so kind, giving, and full of magnificent things to share. His entire life is one of sharing with others, as I would like my entire life to be and as I would hope you would want your life to be. Numerous times I have observed him going out of his way to help others. In fact, he has a propensity for putting others ahead of himself. In this respect, he is a very special human being. Not surprisingly he is held in high regard by everyone who knows him. People who talk about Larry use words like loving, giving, caring, and compassionate. What a magnificent human being this man is. He is truly a human wondera gift from God. Although I am incapable of producing majestic works of art for Larry, every word of this manuscript was written with him in mind. God bless you, Larry.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Foreword by Joe Weider

Back in 1986, Judd Biasiotto literally shocked the sports world when he squatted 575 pounds at a body weight of only 132 poundsa feat that some called the greatest strength sports performance in history. Not surprisingly, many strength experts considered Judds performance unbeatable. When you consider that the record-breaking lift was performed after Judd had undergone major surgery on his back and neck, the accomplishment takes on an out of this world quality. Otherworldly is perhaps the term that best describes the complex personality that is Judd Biasiotto. He is a man of many facets, changing alternately during the day into a world-class athlete, a renowned sport psychologist, an international speaker, or an award-winning writer.

In all honesty though, it was Judds athletic accomplishments that first captured my attention. Although he did not exhibit the muscularity and leverage you would expect in a world-class lifter, he was putting up enormous poundage in the featherweight division. Interestingly, through such techniques as hypnosis, biofeedback, and psychic driving, Judd has learned to control his heart rate, brainwaves, muscle tension, and biochemistry. I would venture to say that the secret to his great strength lies in those powers.

Although it was powerlifting that directed my attention to Judd, it was his writing that brought us together. In my professional opinion, I would have to say that Judd is one of the best sports writers in America. Of course, if I did not feel that way, I would never have recruited him as a feature writer for Muscle and Fitness. His unique writing style might best be described as a cross between James Michener and Lewis Grizzard. He is extremely informative and entertaining. Once you start reading his books, you wont be able to put them down; once you finish, youll wish you hadnt. He is just that good.

Judd is a magnificent story teller, using hilarious anecdotes to entertain and teach. He successfully explains highly technical information so that even a novice to the material can grasp the concepts easily. He describes characters he meetssome who are easily recognizablewith color and candor. Judds expert handling of these characters and his various escapades creates a treasure chest of adventure and enlightenment.

This book will only enhance his image as both an athlete and a writer. Unquestionably, it is one of the best sports books ever written. It chronicles Judd s journey to become the first lightweight powerlifter in the world to break the 600-pound barrier in the squat, a feat that was considered physiologically impossible for a man of his size.

It makes for fascinating reading and it will give you instant inspiration and the unconditional feeling that nothing is impossiblenothing.

Part One2001: A Sports Odyssey

CHAPTER 1

The Odyssey Begins

Awesome Power

Im a god, a supreme being, creator ofofnope, Im not a god. Maybe Im a demon. Yes, a demonmy mother would go along with that. No, I really dont see myself as that. What am I, though? What gives me the power to make my friends act like dogs or cats or even chickens when I feel up to it? And how about my ability to make my elders act like babbling little children? And what about the deception I can create by making myself disappear or having people see things that are not really there? Surely, I must be something special. I must have some type of supernatural power. After all, what other twelve-year-old can do the things I can do?

The Incubus

It all started when I was eleven years old. I was in bed after a really hard day at school. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. In fact, I was completely calm and resting well. I couldnt have been lying there more than five minutes when I drifted off into a nice, peaceful sleep.

I hadnt been asleep for more than an hour when all of a sudden I heard this horrifying scream. It was unlike any scream I had ever heard before. When I opened my eyes, this large, ape-like creature was hovering over me. His face was only inches from me and his eyes looked straight into my mine. His nose was broad and his mouth was abnormally huge. Large fangs protruded from his mouth. The creatures face was twisted in a sardonic smile and a vile odor oozed from his gaping mouth.

Before I could move, his hand clutched my throat and his mouth covered my mouth and nose. I felt my heart stop! I found myself choking for air. I started fighting for my life, kicking and punching at the beast. It possessed awesome strength, though, well beyond any human that I had encountered. I thought I was going to die.
