Preface
A t one time I thought that this book would be my first publication rather than my fifth. I have been lecturing the Shoulder Joint Master class at the University of Oxford for many years now and it has been by far one of my most popular courses for physical therapists. I consider its popularity to be due in part to the fact that many therapists and even patients/athletes that come into the clinic struggle with this particular area of the body. As you read through the pages of this book, you will see that I have included many factors that can affect or relate to the shoulder complex: for example, did you know that the gall bladder or liver can present pain to the shoulder region? If not, then I hope you find the differential diagnosis chapter useful. Many therapists believe that all shoulder and arm pain is coming from the cervical spine and they focus all their effort on this area and completely neglect the shoulder complex. The fact that this entire book is about the shoulder complex indicates my own view of its importance.
I have a sort of case study in my friend Howard Weller, with whom I frequently exercise before classes or clinic. I mention Howard because he has had both shoulder joints replaced and he has just turned 50. Ignoring medical advice to lift nothing he continues to exercise and, if I am honest, I have to say he has had serious gains in strength and size since the shoulders have been replaced. I enjoy the regular training sessions, so thank you Howard!
The subject is, of course, complex in both name and nature even more so in the active, living body and in the chapter on the pelvis and the gluteal muscles I discuss a couple of case studies of patients who presented to my clinic with shoulder pain. I have also included many chapters on the assessment procedures for the shoulder complex that I use in my own clinic and with various treatment strategies through muscle energy techniques, soft tissue release using active and passive movements as well as taping techniques. The final chapter is about rehabilitative exercises that you can recommend to your patients (and athletes) to take home after treatment.
Acknowledgments
A ll my thanks go to Jon Hutchings of Lotus Publishing for having the faith and confidence in me to continue with the dream of writing without you all of my books, including this one, would not have been written and subsequently published.
My thanks to Ian Taylor, who spent a vast amount of time and effort taking and editing the many photographs contained within this book, and who has done an amazing job.
To Stephanie Pickering (editor), without her patience and input this book would definitely not read as well as it does!
Amanda Williams for her amazing illustrations even though many times she probably has no idea of what it is I am asking for and this probably goes for all of my books!
To my mother, Margaret Gibbons, and to my sister Amanda Williams and her husband Philip, and to their children Victoria (who will be 19 this year) and James (who is approaching 22), I thank you all for just being there as I know the last year has been terrible not just for myself but for everybody involved in my life.
Denise Thomas, my fianc and the model in the book, who has stuck with me through thick and thin, especially through 2017, when I lost my son to a tragic motorcycle accident. I truly, truly wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your continued support, love and especially inspiration.
Since the passing of my son, I have begun to realize my purpose in life, and that is to educate as many therapists throughout the world as I can, to try to help them achieve great things in their lives. I hope to do that through my lectures and books. I therefore personally want to thank you, the readers, as without your continual support I definitely would not be able to do what I do.
Dedication
T o my amazing son Thomas Rhys Gibbons, who sadly left my world at 10.51 p.m. on the 28 February 2017, at the age of 17 years and 17 days. Rest in peace my little Tom-Tom you will be truly missed. We will meet again and thats for sure, but not yet as I have too much to achieve with my life first and sadly you have made me realize that!
