Introduction
Generally, when we think of herbs, we think of lovely, aromatic kitchen herbs. Basil, rosemary, thyme, sage, and peppermint are some of the most common that come to mind. While these herbs are delicious in our food, did you know that they can also heal you and protect you from bites and stings, or even migraines? These kitchen herbs are beyond useful, but any plant that has medicinal value is called an herb, whether its just a tiny flower or a hulking tree. If you live in an undeveloped or less developed area than suburbia, theres a good chance you are surrounded by beautiful, beneficial herbs and you may not even know it. But before you go out to forage all the berries, leaves, flowers, and twigs in your backyard, its important to know which plants are useful and which ones are not. Thats where this book comes in.
In the first three chapters of this book, well cover the basics of herbal medicine and how it compares to modern medicine. The following three chapters will discuss how to prepare herbal remedies safely. Well also cover major herbs that are useful for a variety of ailments. Well even talk a little about which plants to avoid and why. In the last three chapters of this book, youll be able to find specific ailments and the herbs that heal them. All of the ailments are listed in the table of contents of this book for quick access.
One of the main resources in the development of this book was the American Botanical Councils Herb Med Pro. This website provides excellent information on herbs and the research associated with them. If research is mentioned in conjunction with an herb, then the website is cited, since it references multiple research papers written for each herb. If you want to do further research yourself, do check out the Herb Med Pro section of the American Botanical Councils website.
Another main resource for this book was the Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine , which discusses precise dosages and remedies. These have been double-checked against the ABCs of Herbal Medicine for herbs that overlap. All of the references will be listed at the end of the book if you are interested in further study.
Now that weve covered the essentials, its time to get started! I hope you enjoy this journey to learning about herbal medicine and the key to improving your health at home.
Chapter 1: Basics of Herbal Medicine
The term herbal medicine seems pretty straightforward. Its herbs that are used as medicine. No surprise there; but what makes these herbs medicinal? And how did we learn to use them? This chapter will discuss these questions. Well also cover the benefits of using herbs to heal.
A lot of plants can be used medicinally. From the roots to the treetops, each part of a plant can be useful in healing different ailments. Plants contain chemicals that have positive, negative, or neutral effects on the body. For example, most parts of deadly nightshade (belladonna), as the name might suggest, are very toxic, and were used as poison in folklore. However, the leaves and roots of the plant can be used as a muscle relaxant and for peptic ulcers. So, this plant has both positive and negative aspects. Despite how interesting it sounds, do not take deadly nightshade unless its prescribed to you. An overdose can be fatal. The plants that have positive aspects if taken in the right dosage are those that are used for herbal medicine and are the basis for modern medicine.
Beyond simply plants grown for herbal use, many plants we eat are also effective for herbal medicine. If youve ever lived outside of Western nations, you may be familiar with fruits and vegetables that are eaten for specific illnesses. Papaya, for example, is not just a delicious fruit for snacking on, but is also used for deworming, digestive issues, and healing wounds. In the US, foods that double as medicine include oats, lemons, onions, and garlic. These are foods easily, and inexpensively, found in grocery stores across the US. They each have beneficial uses and are great to have on hand. So herbal medicine can include edible plants and herbal plants.
History of Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine is ancient, and lets just say, we wouldnt have gotten where we are as a species without it. If it wasnt for herbal medicine, our life span would be 30 years or less. However, the use of herbal medicine helped us heal ailments and live longer. A lot of people will say this is due to modern medicine, but realistically, most people around the world were not using modern medicine until recently. Instead, they relied on herbal medicine. Even now, in areas where modern medications are too expensive, inaccessible, too dangerous, or no longer useful, herbal medicines are the go-to for most communities.
Herbal medicine can be traced back to ancient times. And when I say ancient, I dont mean 100 years ago. Herbal medicine can be found in folklore, burial sites, and religions dating back 60,000 years! Written content of herbs precedes most Western knowledge. The Egyptians and Indians have written lore about herbal medicine from 1500 BCE. All this folklore evolved over the centuries to become traditional medicine in different regions. In the West, herbal medicine evolved from the writings of Greek physicians, but by that point, China and India had already established herbal treatments that are still used today. So, when you practice herbal medicine, you are continuing the traditions of our ancestors and reinforcing the bond between humans and nature.
Today, herbal medicine is having a resurgence in the West, though it hasnt disappeared from other areas of the world. In countries where malaria is a frequent disease, many communities use herbal remedies when more modern medicine fails or isnt available. Unfortunately, modern medicine, while amazing, is also starting to fail. Many of our diseases are adapting to modern medicine and are becoming resistant to them. In cases like this, herbal medicine can be used to help. Using more herbal medicines, instead of relying on synthetic, can help to ensure that diseases are treated, even if they are medicine-resistant.
