PREFACE
All but the first of the essays and fragments in this book are published here for the first time. They constitute the bulk of the philosophically interesting manuscripts in the Santayana collections of the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas and the Columbia University Library. The book itself should be looked upon as another link in the continuing process of bringing to light all of the publishable literary and philosophical product of George Santayana.
In preparing the manuscripts for press, we called upon and received the generous assistance of numerous individuals and organizations. We wish to express our grateful acknowledgment to Daniel Cory for having authorized the publication of these manuscripts.
