PREFACE
Despite good critical receptions, the previous volumes of this work continue to sell slowly. Their publisher, understandably, is reluctant at this time to continue the series. Fortunately, I have been able to find another who thinks that further volumes should be made available, though in a somewhat smaller format than before. The prospect of a volume 9, now in manuscript, though, does depend in part on the fortunes of this.
More evidently and persistently than was true before, I here struggle with various problems whose nature I only faintly discerned for a considerable period, and for which satisfactory answers are not always found. The many false starts, retreats, and advances, here so manifest, exhibit how one might venture speculatively into new territory. One outcome is that it made possible the recently published Privacy, with its comparatively new systematic method and results. In the absence of such a work as this, it would be hard to discover how it was possible to open up that new ground, see the need for some of its important analyses, and be able to provide a new and illuminating account of man. Together the works make evident how creative thinking has a two-fold form, one as confused as it is fresh, the other organized and justified. But the two stand by themselves, each with its own distinctive nature, virtues, and limitations.
