Foreword

K

evin Vandi and I first met in 2009 at work. We were quite different in many ways. We had different attitudes, were at different stages in our careers as physical therapists, and at different stages in our lives. I had started school late in life and was almost 60 years old. Kevin was 25. I have to grudgingly admit that I had become a stereotypically cynical, grumpy old man. Kevin, on the other hand, was relentlessly upbeat and optimistic. I still harbor doubts that he played football in high school, as he says. I suspect he was actually a cheerleader.

We disagreed on everything: religion, politics, the merits of various people, and life in general. However, we were in total agreement in one vital way: both of us were driven to be as competent in our profession as possible, and we were devoted to finding the scientific truth of it and applying it to patients in a practical manner.

This peculiar combination of commonality and complete disagreement sparked a veritable non-stop series of debates over the years that we worked together. By constantly challenging each other, occasionally using terminology that might not be considered professional, we forced each other to examine our own thoughts and beliefs, with the result that both of us learned from each other, albeit sometimes unwillingly. One other thing we have in common is that were both pretty stubborn. In particular, as I got older and my drive inevitably began to wane, his continued unabated, and I relied on him more and more to keep me current.

As all things must, our professional journey together eventually came to an end. Kevin left the practice to start his own business, and I retired, partially due to age and health problems, and partially because I was just tired. If it werent for this, I would have ventured along with Kevin, because I believed then that he was essentially establishing a new paradigm. His success is proof of it.

Its hard to even explain what Kevin does using the old conventional terms.
