Foreword
David Dickinson and Ann Morse have made important contributions in this volume. First, they have rewritten the study of child development through the lens of language. They review familiar developmental domains (discussing attachment, executive function, socioemotional development, risk factors that imperil healthy development), making the case that language development is not just another in that list of domains but, rather, central to all of them: the site where differences in parenting show up most powerfully, the mechanism by which parents promote attachment, executive function, socioemotional development, and cognition, as well as a tool children can wield in their own regulation of attention, management of emotion, involvement in social relations, and ongoing acquisition of knowledge.
