Solutions to common problems
The
Series!
Dear Reader,
We are so excited to offer you this book. Having been immersed in Pilates for over fifteen yearsfirst as practitioners, then as teachers, and finally as teachers of teachersboth of us have a strong commitment and love of this fabulous method. Pilates has made profound and encompassing changes in our bodies and our lives, and we know it will change yours, too.
We had both been ballet dancers since very young, and ballet teachers for many years after that. And yet, after all that time and rigorous training, our bodies were imbalanced, often in pain, and surprisingly weak. When we first began studying Pilates in New York City with Romana Kryzanowska, we had difficulty doing some of the exercises in this book. Bit by bit, however, overworked muscles relaxed, and underused muscles became powerful allies. Imbalances between right and left, upper and lower, flexibility and strength, became smoothed out and movement grew powerful, exciting, and deeply satisfying.
Joe Pilates was a genius! He used Eastern and Western philosophies and exercise systems to formulate a phenomenal fitness system that was fifty years ahead of its time and is still perfect for us today.
Yours,
The

Foreword
As president of the Pilates Method Alliance, I was asked to recommend an author for this project. I did not take this task lightly. Immediately, two people came to my mind. Amy Taylor Alpers and Rachel Taylor Segel are sisters, partners, friends, and, above all, Pilates professionals with the highest integrity. They are the owners of the nationally renowned studio and teacher-training facilityThe Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado.
Amy and Rachel have been quietly and diligently carrying on the Pilates work with the highest integrity for well over ten years. I knew that their enthusiasm, knowledge, and attention to detail would help to create a remarkable, high-quality Pilates book that our entire community would be proud to see in print.
The EverythingPilates Book was created with love by these two remarkable individuals. Enjoy their insights, knowledge, and expertiseand may Joe and Clara Pilates be with you as you explore this remarkable system of movement.
In health,
Kevin A. Bowen

Introduction
Joseph Hubertus Pilates was an extraordinary, outspoken, vibrant personarguably a geniuswho was truly driven to help people be healthy. During his sixty-some years of pioneering work in the fitness industry, Joseph Pilates helped thousands of people be healthy, be alive, and his exceptional and powerful fitness technique is more popular today than ever.
Never in history, Joseph Pilates wrote in his book, Your Health, have more time and money been expended to attain normal physical perfection than in the present era! He was writing in 1934! Though times have changed dramatically since then, the fitness problems he saw around him havent changed much at all. People still suffer from too much stress, tend to lead sedentary lives, and too often try to buy a fast fitness fix or cram their entire fitness program into a few muscle-wrenching workouts a week.
