INTRODUCTION

Its hard to beat the satisfaction of travelling on foot settling into a steady rhythm, surrounded by incredible scenery, with the freedom to stop wherever takes your fancy. Its an endlessly rewarding and sustainable activity, and one that we feel deserves to be celebrated. Thats why weve created Hike .

Compiled by a team of eager outdoor enthusiasts, this book features a curated selection of 125 spectacular walking trails across the globe. Some have been chosen for their stunning scenery, some for their intriguing history and others for the inspiring challenge they present. (We say: dream big.) No route has been deemed too short or long, with the options ranging from a half-day boardwalk stroll around a spongy bog in Estonia to an epic six-month trek along the Appalachian Trail in the US. Theyre not all knee-pounding mountain ascents either, and youll find plenty of coastal ambles and forest walks alongside more classic backpacking routes.

The book is handily organized by continent, so wherever youre headed you can discover the best trails on offer. Even better, each route has practical information to help you plan your trip, including distance, total ascent and duration, plus tips on the best sights to see and snacks to devour along the way. Weve also included elevation profiles, so you can quite literally see the ups and downs of the route. What more do you need to head off on a hiking adventure?

PREPARING FOR YOUR HIKE

Advance planning is essential before undertaking any hike especially if youre setting off on a multiday trip or heading out into the backcountry alone. To help you prepare, weve put together some handy pointers on organizing your next hiking adventure.

Planning a Hike

To plan a successful hiking trip, youll need to consider everything from where you want to go and what kind of distance youll be able to cover, right down to the specific details surrounding equipment, accommodation and transport logistics. Most people walk at an average pace of around 5 km (3 miles) an hour, but remember that this will vary depending on the terrain, the conditions and your level of fitness. Make sure to check the weather in advance (and pack accordingly), and work out where youll be sleeping consider local laws on wild camping and the need to book in advance as well as how youll get to and from the trails start and end points.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Responsible Hiking

Walking is one of the most sustainable forms of travel. Protect the environment by keeping to the trail, choosing camping spots carefully and using a stove rather than a fire. Always take your rubbish with you. Remember not to remove anything from the wild or disturb any animals.

Clothing

The key word here is layers you want to be able to easily add clothes when youre cold and remove them when youre hot. The standard set-up is a base layer; a mid-layer such as a fleece or, in colder conditions, an insulated puffer jacket; and an outer-layer jacket. Choose a base layer thats made from merino wool, polyester or nylon, as these materials wick moisture away from your body; avoid cotton as it gets damp quickly and stays damp. Jackets need to be waterproof and breathable look for something made from GORE-TEX or similar. On your bottom half, choose comfortable trousers made from a quick-dry fabric (zip-off styles are especially versatile), and consider packing a pair of (lightweight) waterproof trousers.

The kind of hiking boot you choose depends on how long youll be walking and how much youll be carrying with you. Key factors include weight, breathability, durability and water resistance, as well as the level of support you need we recommend getting fitted by an expert.

Navigation

A paper map and compass are the most reliable and simplest forms of finding your way, and wont leave you relying on technology. Still, do bring a smartphone and a GPS watch (if you have one), ensure the relevant apps work offline and dont forget a power bank gadgets can quickly eat their way through batteries.

HIKING SAFETY

Safe Hiking Practice

Dont overestimate distance and make sure youve finished hiking before it gets too dark.

Carry enough water, food and snacks for the duration of your hike, plus extras in reserve.

Always take a mobile phone with you but dont rely on it for navigation.

Always tell someone where youre going and how long youll be gone for.

In remote areas, try to avoid hiking alone.

Trail Etiquette

You should stick to marked paths, both to protect the surrounding environment and to avoid any potential legal issues with trespassing. Keep noise to a minimum, avoid bright clothing and equipment where possible, and make sure to close gates behind you when walking through fields containing livestock. On narrow trails, the usual custom is for hikers walking downhill to give way to hikers coming up.
