Oman (Bradt Travel Guides): summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Oman (Bradt Travel Guides)" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This new, fully updated fifth edition of Bradts Oman offers all the information needed to plan a visit to this rapidly developing Arabian nation, written by experts Tony Walsh, a veteran of Omans travel industry, and Diana Darke, who originally worked for the Omani government in 1980 and has remained acquainted with the country ever since. All parts of the country are covered, including areas not featured by other guides, and Arabic script for town names is detailed to aid on-the-ground navigation and exploration. New for this edition are coverage of the restored medieval walled town of Manah, with its labyrinth of passages and mud-brick houses, developments at the UNESCO site of Ubar at Shisr, and in Muscat the fort at Mutrah, with its panoramic views over the Corniche. Also covered are the seasonal cloud forest in Dhofar in the south, the mountains of the north that leap from the plains to over 3,000 metres, the two major international airports in Muscat and Salalah, transport and road developments making access from Dubai quicker and improving the journey into the Wihibah Sands, and new hotels and restaurants, from luxury to simple. For outdoor enthusiasts, adventure tourism, extreme sports (including caving and the via ferrata climbing route), catamaran sailing and Tour of Oman bike race are all covered, as well as birdwatching. Whether trekking little used mountain paths or visiting small villages wrapped around date oases, browsing the local market or enjoying the weekend camel and horse races, Bradts Oman is an indispensable companion. From the famed Rub Al Khali, the worlds largest sand desert, to the northern coastal town of Qurayyat, it offers everything you need for a successful trip.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

PRICE CODES Throughout this guide we have used price codes to indicate the cost of those places to stay and eat listed in the guide. For a key to these price codes, see for restaurants.

MAPS

Keys and symbols Maps include alphabetical keys covering the locations of those places to stay, eat or drink that are featured in the book. Note that regional maps may not show all hotels and restaurants in the area: other establishments may be located in towns shown on the map.

Grids and grid references Several maps use gridlines to allow easy location of sites. Map grid references are listed in square brackets after the name of the place or sight of interest in the text, with page number followed by grid number, eg: [145 C3].

A note about spelling In Oman, road signs, and many other types of signage, are in Arabic and transliterated into English. Over the course of Omans rapid development, the official transliteration of some place names has changed. To complicate matters further, some place names may have both an official name and a more common, almost universal, name.

In this guide we have used what we believe is the current official name version as used on maps produced by the National Survey Authority a division of the Ministry of Defence, and which is the official Oman government map and geographical name authority and therefore is consistent with the free map of the country supplied by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

International borders The maps in this guide are not an authority on international borders.
