Hvard Haarstad is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Geography, University of Bergen. He has worked extensively on the political economy of natural resource extraction, and the role of social movements, civil society and labor unions in politicizing extraction.

Mark Amen is graduate program director in the Department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida/Tampa and Deputy Editor of Globalizations. His current research is on urban indebtedness and the global economy.

Social Movements, the Poor and the New Politics of the Americas

This edited volume examines social movements in Latin America and the Caribbean in relation to the political transformations that have occurred in the region over the last twenty years, particularly in relation to poverty. Revitalized social movements have been an important element of these transformations, and through links with political parties they have promoted innovative proposals to repoliticize structures of disempowerment and marginalization. These proposals have now matured sufficiently to warrant critical assessment.

The case studies in the collection illustrate both the enduring experiences of powerlessness and incapacity as well as provide examples where social movement actors have gained access to powerful spaces. The editors analysis of social movement practices is framed by two strands the role of networks and linkages that social movements build and operate through, and the significance of the scale of social movement actions and organization. The authors argue that social movements are most effective in reaching substantive goals when they are grounded in grassroots bases and engage in horizontal networking across several social sectors.

This book was previously published as a special issue of Globalizations.
