Man and Animals In the New Hebrides Written as an account of the Percy Sladen - photo 1
Man and Animals
In the New Hebrides
Written as an account of the Percy Sladen Trust Expeditions to the New Hebrides in 1922-3 and 1927, this is one of the first detailed studies of the flora and fauna of these distant islands. Fully illustrated with maps and figures, this book describes the native Hebrideans and the reasons for their depopulation. The author, a biologist and zoologist, then details the insect, avian and mammalian inhabitants of the islands and their behaviours.

To my many friends, both white and black, in the New Hebrides, especially
W.A.Alec
R. E. T.AugustDhipla
T. O. T.Tilly
IF I were to make really adequate mention of the kindness of all those who have helped me in connexion with my work in the New Hebrides, this Preface would be disproportionately long. The reader must realize that the few words which follow are tokens of very real gratitude.
My two visits to the New Hebrides were partly financed by the Trustees of the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund and by my mother and brother (Mrs. G. E. Baker and Mr. S. J. Baker). The latter has also helped very greatly by preparing the maps which illustrate this book and in many other ways. For great kindness and helpfulness while in the islands I am indebted to Mr. and Mrs. W. Anderson, the Rev. R. E. Tempest, and Mr. T. O. Thomas; and I thank Professor T. T. Barnard for his companionship on my first visit. To my wife and Mr. J. de H. Morel, who joined me towards the end of my second visit, I am grateful for infusing the new enthusiasm which resulted in the achievement of our most important objects.
I wish also to thank the following :
For giving me the necessary leave of absence, and for advice :
  • Professor E. S. Goodrich, F.R.S.
For help in the New Hebrides :
  • Mr. J. R. Salisbury (especially).
  • Mr. O. Stevens.
  • Pre Ardouin.
  • The Rev. and Mrs. F. G. Bowie.
  • The late H.B.M. Resident Commissioner.
  • Mr. Bell.
  • The Captain of S.Y. Southern Cross.
  • Captain Brown.
  • Messrs. Burns, Philp & Co.
For presenting me with all the alcohol required for the preservation of specimens :
  • The Colonial Sugar Refining Co., Sydney.
For taking charge of my collection of insects, and for other help :
  • Professor E. B. Poulton, F.R.S.
For identifying, describing, and reporting on my specimens :
  • Mr. Oldfield Thomas (Mammals).
  • Mr. N. B. Kinnear (Birds).
  • Mr. H. W. Parker (Reptiles).
  • Mr. J. R. Norman (Fishes, except Eels).
