South Asia 2060 is a dialogue among 47 experts from a diverse range of expertise and backgrounds, ranging from policymakers to academia to civil society activists and visionaries, on the likely longer-range trajectories of South Asias future. The collection explores current regional trends, possible future trajectories, and the key factors that will determine whether these trajectories are positive or negative for the region, as a region. Departing from a purely security-based analysis, the volume considers factors such as development and human well-being to reveal not what will happen but what could happen, as well as the impact present conditions could have on the rest of the world.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Conceived and implemented at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future at Boston University, this book is part of a series of efforts undertaken by the center aimed at better understanding regional futures. Others in the series include conferences and reports on Africa 2060 and Latin America 2060 , published by the Pardee Center in 2010 and 2011 respectively (http://www.bu.edu/ pardee/) . These efforts further the Pardee Centers mission of facilitating research and generating scholarly discourse and policy options on longer-range challenges and to seek to identify, anticipate and enhance the potential for human progress in the longer-range future.
At the time of putting this book together we were, respectively, director (Adil Najam) and research fellow (Moeed Yusuf) at the Pardee Center. We initiated this book four years ago and carried it along with us as our professional lives took us away from Boston while the manuscript was still being compiled. We are happy to have been able to pull together original essays by some of the most noted experts on South Asia and are highly indebted to each author who has contributed to this volume. We are grateful not only for their contributions but also for their patience and indulgence as we went through the rounds of revisions and edits. We are fully aware that all of them took up this assignment at our personal requests despite being overly committed.
We are deeply saddened to note that two of our contributors, Sir Hilary Synnott and Jalal Alamgir, will not be around to witness the publication of this volume. Both of them passed away before the manuscript went to print. Their chapters were however submitted and accepted before their unfortunate passing. We dedicate this collection to their memory.
