About the Contributors
Brian Anderson is professor of Political Science at the Mississippi University for Women, where he teaches courses on US foreign policy, terrorism and political organizations. In 2004, he taught a seminar on Al Qaeda at a university in London. He has previously published on the federated structure of American interest groups and on President Bill Clintons town hall debate style. His PhD is from the Pennsylvania State University.
Melodee Baines earned a BA in modern languages and linguistics in 2002 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is writing her dissertation on illiteracy and political development in the Arab world to complete her PhD in international studies, specializing in international political economy, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She speaks French, German and Arabic and is a former Fulbright Scholar (Germany), a three-time recipient of the US State Department Critical Language Scholarship for Arabic, and began a National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Fellowship in Morocco in September 2009.
Clayton Chun occupies the General Hoyt Vandenberg Chair of Aerospace Studies in the Department of Distance Education at the US Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Before assuming his current duties, he was professor of economics at the college. He completed a full career in the Air Force. His assignments include missile, space, acquisition, education, strategy development and command positions. Dr. Chun holds a bachelor of science in business from the University of California, Berkeley; a master of arts in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara; a master of science in systems management from the University of Southern California; and a doctorate in public policy analysis from the RAND Graduate School, a part of the RAND Corporation. He has written articles and books dealing with issues related to national security, military history and economics.
Jack Covarrubias is an assistant professor of political science at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is also a member of the governing board of the National Social Science Association. Over several years in the military and academia, his research interests have included security studies, American foreign policy and international development. He has published numerous works, most recently including the co-authored book To Protect and Defend: Homeland Security Policy (2006), Strategic Interests in the Middle East: Opposition or Support for US Foreign Policy (2007) and the co-authored chapter, The best defense? Iraq and beyond, in the edited volume The Second Term of George W. Bush: Prospects and Perils (2006).
Daniel Graeber is an author and political analyst working in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His work, notably on Iraq, has been published extensively by United Press International and foreign media outlets. In 2005, he circulated a white paper to US government officials and academics regarding US policy toward Hamas and has taught various philosophy and communications courses at the university level. His latest academic work dealt with the implications in Washington regarding its long-standing alignment with Israel. He also writes on international law and war crimes for the Foreign Policy Association.
B.J. Jordan is an independent scholar and author residing in Gulfport, Mississippi. He earned both his BA (2003) and MA (2004) in political science from the University of Southern Mississippi. He attained ABD status with the International Development PhD Program at the University of Southern Mississippi in 2008. He is a retired sergeant from the Miami-Dade County Sheriffs department (19812001). He is a six-year US Navy cryptology veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. His publications include a co-authored chapter with Robert J. Pauly, Jr., entitled The centrality of Egypt to the future of the Greater Middle East, in Jack Covarrubias and Tom Lansford, eds,
