Sovereignty Revisited
This book explores the new debates on Basque sovereignty and statehood that have emerged in the post-violence Basque political scenario. It deciphers how sovereignty is understood or imagined by a revitalized civil society after the unilateral cessation of operations by ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom). The contributors to this book investigate the new political field developing in the nexus between conventional party politics, established socio-cultural and linguistic organizations, creative civil society initiatives and innovative activism.
This is a book for graduate students, scholars and professionals in political science, social anthropology, European studies, political philosophy, transnational studies, sociology, political geography and global studies. It will also be of interest to academic specialists in Basque studies, specialists working on sovereignty, nationalism and globalization, and professionals in governance, international relations, foreign affairs, European politics and diplomacy.
shild Kols is a social anthropologist and research professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and was the head of PRIOs Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding Program from 2005 to 2011. She has conducted long-term fieldwork in multi-ethnic communities in India and China and has written on Tibet, Nepal, Inner Mongolia and Northeast India with a focus on governance and governmentality, identity politics, discourse and representation. Her latest books are Basque Nationhood: Towards a Democratic Scenario (co-edited with Pedro Ibarra Gell) and Reclaiming the Forest: The Ewenki Reindeer Herders of Aoluguya (co-edited with Yuanyuan Xie). She is also the author of Tourism and Tibetan Culture in Transition: A Place Called Shangrila and On the Margins of Tibet: Cultural Survival on the Sino-Tibetan Frontier (with Monika P. Thowsen). Since 2006, shild Kols has coordinated an institutional cooperation between PRIO and the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) in New Delhi. Her current research is on gender, peacebuilding and conflict management in Northeast India and Myanmar.
Pedro Ibarra Gell is a professor of political science at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where he served as director of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. During the end of Francoism and the transition to democracy in Spain, Dr. Gell worked as a labour lawyer and advocate for political prisoners. He later founded and directed Parte Hartuz, a consolidated research group on participatory democracy based at the University of the Basque Country. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Bordeaux (France), Barcelona (Spain) and Reno, Nevada (USA). His main areas of research are theories of collective action, political participation, social movements and nationalism, in which he has conducted numerous research projects and published extensively. In addition to his academic work, he is known for his association with various Basque social movements.

The series Routledge Studies in Radical History and Politics has two areas of interest. Firstly, this series aims to publish books which focus on the history of movements of the radical left. Movement of the radical left is here interpreted in its broadest sense as encompassing those past movements for radical change which operated in the mainstream political arena as with political parties, and past movements for change which operated more outside the mainstream as with millenarian movements, anarchist groups, utopian socialist communities, and trade unions. Secondly, this series aims to publish books which focus on more contemporary expressions of radical left-wing politics. Recent years have been witness to the emergence of a multitude of new radical movements adept at getting their voices in the public sphere. From those participating in the Arab Spring, the Occupy movement, community unionism, social media forums, independent media outlets, local voluntary organisations campaigning for progressive change, and so on, it seems to be the case that innovative networks of radicalism are being constructed in civil society that operate in different public forms.
The series very much welcomes titles with a British focus, but is not limited to any particular national context or region. The series will encourage scholars who contribute to this series to draw on perspectives and insights from other disciplines.
