In presenting this rare insight into a resistance movement in the making, this book resurrects an empowering image of Antonio Gramsci infused with the writings of Edward Said. This it does in an effort to both problematize the dominant interpretations of Gramscis writings in International Relations, and to decolonise the abstract way in which resistance and counter hegemony are often studied in the discipline.Contributing a mapping of a silenced alternative and hopeful way forward in the context of escalating violence, this book is essential reading for those studying the Arab-Israeli conflict, Middle East Politics and International Relations.

The making of this book would not have been possible without the support of many wonderful people, to whom I am grateful. To those specifically acknowledged in the little space below, this writing owes a special debt, and profound wells of gratitude.
To the intellectuals and activists who participated in this research with warmth, insight and generosity, fuelled it with passion, and inspired it into becoming. Without them, the pages that follow would not exist.
To Jan Selby and Benno Teschke, for taking all of my enthusiasm for this project and guiding its chaotic process of transformation into a coherent piece of writing. To Jan for his clarity, commitment and attention to empirical detail. To Benno for many pleasurable conversations on Gramsci and the philosophy of praxis, his attention to my voice, and his unwavering eye on the big picture.
To my community of heroes at Sussex University, who were my moments of delight, my sanity and my saving grace. To Synne, Maia, Hela and Katya for saving me when I needed it most, for a beautiful friendship, and for conversations that always led me back to myself. To Ishan, Clemens, Steffan, Ole, Andrea, Francesca and Can for uplifting days and nights filled with music, laughter, and love.
