Many people contributed in publishing Divided Nations and Transitional Justice. First of all, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the late former president Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea and the former president Richard von Weizscker of Germany for fully sharing the purpose of the book, and approving me to publish their valuable writings and documents. Without these two former presidents strong support, the publication of the book would never have been possible.
The idea of this book first emerged in December 2005 when the two former presidents joined in the Global Forum on Civilization and Peace held in Seoul as keynote speakers. As the organizer of the forum, I was deeply touched by the heart-felt friendship they had shared for almost 40 years, their commitment to peace, and their tireless intellectual concern about many issues of divided nation and transitional justice. From that moment on until he passed away in 2009, President Kim did not spare his kind support, advice and encouragement, providing a great momentum to turning this book into a reality. Therefore, it is with heart-breaking sadness that I am publishing this book two years after his passing.
I flew to Berlin in 2007 and met the former president von Weizscker at his office to discuss this book project. Ever since then, he has consistently supported me by allowing me to include many of his insightful speeches delivered in Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka and Germany.
My special gratitude goes to the other contributors who generously shared their writings for the book. I feel privileged to introduce the written thoughts of Yuji Ishida of Tokyo University, Ito Narihiko of Chuo University, Japan, and Gavan McCormack of the Australian National University to our readers. I also send my heart-felt gratitude to Professor Claus Offe, a pioneer in transitional justice studies, and Chairman Martin Salm of the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ) stationed in Berlin for their important contributions.
