The European Union and Interregionalism is the most comprehensive study of interregionalism to date, providing a vigorous analysis of its role and functions in the architecture of global governance, and of the place of qualitative differences between regional actors in shaping interregional relationships. Regionalism itself is an established phenomenon, with regional politics becoming increasingly institutionalised. As a result, with the EU as forerunner, regions have begun to exert themselves in the external policy space, developing networks of relations including, prominently, interregional relations. We have thus seen the emergence of a new governance space at the interregional level, banded on one side by sites of global governance, and on the other by governance at the regional level. Important questions challenging the current literature of these interregional structures include, do interregional relationships conform to theoretical expectations?, and what patterns of engagement and interaction are emerging within the EUs core interregional partnerships, and are these replicated elsewhere? Exploring interregionalism beyond the core Europe-Asia partnerships, including the network of relations centred on ASEAN, this book should be read by all those engaged in consideration of interregional structures to understand how patterns of EU-centred interregional engagement, rather than being sui generis, are increasingly evident in the broader network of interregional relationships

Preface
Interregionalism is a relatively new arena for research, despite a long history of group-to-group relations in one form or another. In part this is due to the relatively recent emergence of dialogue structures that exclude the European Union, a process that has made interregionalism seem more than simply an EU-centred phenomenon. Reflecting the progressive emergence of new interregional structures, the study of interregionalism has itself gained pace, particularly over the last decade. Nevertheless, considerable work remains to be done, notably in identifying patterns of engagement and explanatory factors. This volume is a contribution to that process.
The volume began life under the auspices of the National Centre for Research on Europe at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand). Initial primary research was undertaken from bases at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitt (Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany) and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (Jakarta, Indonesia). Additional research was undertaken during my time at the University of Warwick (Coventry, United Kingdom). My gratitude goes to all those individuals at these institutions who made this process easier. In particular, I wish to extend my thanks to the following for their comments and advice: Martin Holland, Jrgen Rland, Shirin Rai, Ben Rosamond and Shaun Breslin. I am, of course, solely responsible for the content of the book.
