FOREWORD TO FIRST EDITION
Nature offers abundant sources for many lead molecules to meet the growing needs of drug, cosmetic, excipients, biodiesel, fragrance, food, nutraceutical and, pesticide industry. In addition, advance screening methods coupled with robotic separation strategies and metabolic engineering have helped to expand the pool the drug leads as well as research interest significantly in the natural product research. Hence, in recent years, graduate as well as postgraduate education in pharmacy has been continuously supporting these new trends in natural product research.
Over and above, the future successful development of new nature derived compounds requires thorough knowledge of the pharmacognosy and phytochemistry subjects. The book entitled "Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry: A Comprehensive Approach provides ample source of complete information in lucid and simple language addressing these needs. The authors have elaborately dealt with the needs for teaching and learning the subject Pharmacognosy.
The authors with their rich experience in the field have made one more contribution towards the strengthening of pharmacognosy subject in pharmacy education. I personally think that a long felt need for such complete book has been fulfilled.
Preface to Second Edition
We authors are really gratified by popular acceptance of the first edition of this textbook just in the four years since publication. During this period Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has introduced new and uniform syllabus for pharmacy course across the country. Hence, this second edition attempts to provide not only technical corrections, updates and clarifications in all chapters of the original book but also added new topics like serotaxonomical classification, markers, herbal excipients, novel herbal dosage forms, antioxidants in skin cosmetics, skin whitening (bleaching) agents, different chemical classes of cosmetic raw material, edible vaccines, ethanobotany, hallucinogenic plants, teratogenic plants, Protection of Plant Variety and Farmers Right Act, 2001 (PPVFR Act), Plant Breeders' Rights (PBR) or Plant Variety Rights (PVR), Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), ASU- DTAB, ASD- DCC, ASU-Pharmacopoeias, NMPB etc. We hope that this revised second edition will be more lucid, palatable and will continue to appeal to students and professionals of natural product chemistry. Authors are thankful to editor to bring this edition in present format.

Preface to First Edition
However, Pharmacognosy subject is as old as pharmacy and mankind evolution; recently it is evolved as a multidisciplinary subject focusing many modern disciplines like phytochemistry, chemotaxonomy, biotechnology, clinical trials, herbal drug interaction and even novel drug delivery systems like phytosomes rather only botanical and taxonomical descriptions. Due to rapid growth in demand and popularity of natural products, research is directed towards patentable drug discovery and development in the field of pharmacognosy.
Recent advances in extraction, analytical, hyphenated and screening techniques continues to hasten major changes in pharmacognosy subject. Modernization of conventional and/or traditional dosage forms is opening doors to Industrial Pharmacognosy. Due to most recent technologies and innovative chemical concepts, many new drugs or drug candidates still originated from natural products or derivatives thereof. Even in this era of nanotechnology, natural drugs are important part of primary health care which is giving pharmacognosy professionals new possibilities to exploit the huge diversity designed and generated by nature. There is a shortage of established scientists engaged in pharmacognosy research, which tends to involve subject matter beyond the conventional scientist's knowledge base. Hence, actual secret of opportunities in pharmacognosy research is that only the tip of the iceberg seems to have been discovered yet.
Many pharmacognosy textbooks are available in market but advanced literature on recent topics is limited. This book comprises about 30 chapters from basic introduction of pharmacognosy up to various recent topics emerged. It is interdisciplinary in character with blend of traditional and current knowledge that would be easily available to the students, professionals and especially researchers of botany, biotechnology, chemistry, pharmacognosy and phytochemistry. A new approach for subject pharmacognosy seems long overdue, and we believe that this book will fill the void.
