Praise for Yoga Where You Are

In Yoga Where You Are, Dianne Bondy and Kat Heagberg offer indispensable knowledge for all yoga practitioners to personalize their practice and honor the body theyre in today. This book is a much-needed resource for yoga students in bigger bodies, stiff bodies, older bodies, and disabled bodies since many teachers dont know how to work with us. Now we can take our practice back into our own hands. I cant wait to share this excellent resource in my teacher trainings and with my students.

AMBER KARNES, founder of Body Positive Yoga

Yoga Where You Are is a resource for all people to practice in a way that meets them where they areand grow with them! It offers the opportunity to learn, explore, and practice with an emphasis on accessibility, creative variations, and a message deeply rooted in self-acceptance and a celebration of the worth and value of all bodies, all people. I highly recommend this as a foundational yoga book for anyone and everyone at any point on their yoga journey.

MELANIE KLEIN, cofounder of the Yoga & Body Image Coalition, editor of Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body

In an industry where the phrase were all one is far too often used to dismiss, marginalize, and exclude those who dont fit the thin, flexible, able, white-bodied mold, this book is a revelation! Dianne and Kat speak to a shared humanity that isnt about sameness but rather about celebrating our differences so that everyone can experience the benefits that yoga can offer.

JESAL PARIKH, co-host of the Yoga Is Dead podcast

The future of yoga looks like thispeople of all abilities sharing a practice that is designed to connect us to a deeper part of ourselves and to each other. Yoga has the power to transform our lives personally as well as collectively, but that can only happen when we share a practice that is designed to be welcoming for all. Dianne Bondy and Kat Heagberg have shown us how to do that in a masterful and yet simple way.

Foreword

Jes Baker

As someone who lives in a fat body and believes that every person deserves the opportunity to move in the body they have (however they like), I have seen the struggle for a lot of us to reclaim the physical part of ourselves that society is quick to other. As a fat-positive body liberationist, it is my mission to change the current narrative of self-hate to one of self-acceptance and ultimately, inclusive freedom. In both of my books, Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls and Landwhale, I speak about all the things that fat bodies can do if desired, including finding joy in movement, exploring love, and enjoying intimate relationships. My hope is that through these conversations and through similar conversations that other incredible world changers have been having for decades, we can all learn how to become empowered by rewriting our bodily narrative and deciding what we personally need while on our healing journey.

I see and experience some of the struggles for people in nonconforming bodies to find joyful movement. For a long time, fitness culture, the wellness industry (which is diet culture, but yknow, just rebranded), and specifically yoga have been influenced by the socially vetted beauty standard and diet culture. But beauty standards and diet culture tell us only one story: that thin, white, able-bodied, and conventionally attractive people are the lucky few who get to dictate and participate in their own wellness and happiness. It is this same cultural idea that has made yoga about acrobatic poses, expensive athletic wear, and other elite ideals. The reality is that while no one is obligated to move their body (ever), moving our bodies can be a powerful tool used to reconnect our body and brain through healing our nervous systemsomething that every body deserves. It seems especially important to me that those who have experienced traumatic situations through cultural oppression are also afforded access to the multitude of ways we can physically reconnect through compassionate movement. Healing is a right for all.

The yoga and wellness industry has created an image that rarely celebrates the diversity of body sizes, abilities, race, or age (among other diverse aspects) that we see around us in real life. Dianne and Kat tackle these ideas head-on. This book is about representing more people on the mat, creating clarity about what yoga is, and celebrating more options for asana and different bodies. Yoga Where You Are celebrates the diversity of yoga through postures, breath, and philosophy. It explores yoga through our individual experiences in the collective practice while also offering recommendations for teachers on how to create safer, more inclusive practice spaces and sequences for their students. Yoga Where You Are will help you gain the confidence to trust your body and find your place on the mat.

Threeno, FOURcheers for Dianne and Kat who have used their years of experience within the yoga world to create this phenomenal guide. This exploration of yoga allows us to move deeper into our practice while also meeting us wherever were at when it comes to healing our connection with our body! Doing this is no small feat, and we need more of this in our world.
