Welcome to Naples, Pompeii & the Amalfi Coast

For me, Campania is Italy at its most authentic, where billowing clothes dry on dilapidated balconies and buzzing Vespas speed through animated streets. I love it for its vivid contrasts, the way in which grit and grandiosity coexist. Its as if youre living in an opera, tinged with the comedy of Rossini and the tragedy of Pompeii. I often catch a bus to Amalfi where rough stairways climb through ancient pastures to spectacular Mediterranean viewpoints. Up there on the terraced cliffsides, it is as calm as Naples is chaotic.

HIKING THE COAST

When it comes to easy accessibility, gorgeous scenery and sheer number of trails, theres no better place to go hiking in Italy than the Amalfi. The coastline is handsomely endowed with footpaths, many dating back to medieval times when they served as the primary means of getting from village to village. These days local farmers still use the paths to access their terraced smallholdings, but the bulk of foot traffic is recreational walkers.

Sentiero degli Dei

Making a spectacular traverse high above the Mediterranean with heavenly views over terraced fields and hazy mountains, the path of the gods crosses a typical Amalfi pastiche of dramatic natural landscapes modified by generations of human settlers.

Valle delle Ferriere

Often overshadowed by the Sentiero degli Dei, the damper, greener, more secluded Valle delle Ferriere inhabits a flora-rich valley north of Amalfi town that is still filled with the ghosts of a once vibrant milling industry.

Sentiero dei Fortini

This 5km footpath along Capris rocky western shore is practically the only place on the island where you can feel a genuine sense of history and solitude. It starts high above the Grotta Azzurra and finishes near a popular beach passing three Anglo-French ruined forts en route.
