COVID-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

Welcome to Barcelona

Ive been getting to know Barcelona since I was a teenager growing up in southern Andaluca. Like countless others, Im bewitched by the golden beaches, jewel-like medieval architecture, Modernisme marvels and one-of-a-kind cuisine. But its much more than the headline sights, Michelin stars and Mediterranean sun that pull me back. Its the village-vibe squares, neighbourhood markets and exquisitely tiled homes; gentle gegants (papier-mch giants) bobbing through centuries-old streets; sprawling views from the pine-scented Collserola hills; and a quick caf morphing effortlessly into a beautiful three-course lunch.

ARCHITECTURAL MAGIC

Few cities are defined by their architecture to quite the same extent as Barcelona. A tangle of narrow medieval streets fills the ancient Ciutat Vella (Old City), beyond which the boulevards of LEixample reveal some of countrys most inspiring buildings. More contemporary design awaits along the waterfront and northwest into the former industrial hub of El Poblenou.

Modernista Wonders

The weird and wonderful undulations of Antoni Gauds creations are echoed in countless Modernista flights of fancy across town. The gateway to these astonishing architectural works is the neighbourhood of LEixample, with Gauds La Pedrera and Casa Batll (pictured) or the unmissable (pictured), still under construction 100 years after his death.
