This book is dedicated to editors-in chief I have known: Shirley, Jerry, Bob, Edna, Pat, Rheba, Jan, Donna, Kitty, Tom, George, Brad, Jan, Rudy, Lenny, Christine, and many others. Some are gone. Some are retired. Some are very active. You have mentored and taught more professionals than can ever be known. And I am one of them. Thank you.
Getting started on your first serious writing and publishing endeavor can be daunting. As academics, we spend countless hours devoted to our chosen field of study, however, we get little formal instruction in publishing or writing. When we receive our first academic position to teach, conduct research, mentor students, or serve on committees, there are so many competing priorities. Authoring your first big academic article can get pushed to the side.
Most of us try to learn writing and publishing on the go, either from colleagues or by trial and error. Practical information on getting published in a peer-reviewed journal can be difficult to find. The Little Guide to Getting Your Journal Article Published: Simple Steps for Success provides all the information an aspiring author needs to go from idea to a published article. In a positive and supportive fashion, author John Bond guides the reader through the many steps all authors face in writing a journal article. It is chock full of practical tips in a straight-forward presentation to get to the heart of what a busy author needs to know and do.
John Bond has been an editor and a publisher at an academic publisher. He oversaw the publishing of over twenty thousand journal articles. Now as a publishing consultant, he advises prospective authors on writing and publishing. With thirty years of experience, John is distinctly qualified to guide writers on their journey to becoming a published author. For many years, I had the pleasure of working with John who thoughtfully mentored me in my writing endeavors. It is exciting to see his easy-to-follow knowledge and skills written in this book.
The Little Guide to Getting Your Journal Article Published is an invaluable guide for anyone trying to publish their first article as well as those experienced authors who are trying to improve their process and increase their chances of being accepted. I enthusiastically recommend the book to help jump start their publishing efforts.

Publishing is a vast landscape with a wide array of gifted writers who have some of the most important messages to deliver to their community and the wider world. I have worked with legends in their field as well as students just getting started. Many have been based in North America and Europe, but also in Bangladesh, Iran, and Cameroon. They all share one thing in common: the desire to communicate and be part of the intellectual discourse improving their global community.
But there are barriers to getting published: free time, limited resources, being new to a field, the old guard blocking advancement, and writing and publishing knowledge. This book addresses the last one: how to get your academic journal article published. The book guides those with a desire to become a published author.
I have worked for over thirty years in scholarly publishing: as an editor, publisher, chief content officer, author, mentor, and writing and publishing consultant. See the About the Author section at the end of the book to learn more about my background including my YouTube channel (which has over one hundred videos on scholarly publishing topics you might find of interest). I have overseen the publishing of over 20,000 journal articles in my career and written five books myself. By far my greatest accomplishment is helping novice and expert writers get published and spread their message.
I decided to write this book as a response to so many authors, clients, and friends who had many questions about the process of getting an article published in a credible peer review journal. This slim volume lays out the step-by-step process to achieving your dream of becoming a published author.
The process is: read widely, have a message, set a plan, assign dates and a timeline to each task, share your work with colleagues, choose quality over expediency, and plan for the long-term and not just tomorrow. Good luck and let me know when you publish or next article!
This book is an accumulation of knowledge that I have gained over the last thirty plus years. I have learned so much from so many people. From the first editorial board meeting I attended in Baltimore for a psychiatric nursing journal, to helping to select new editors for peer review journals, to speaking with authors one-on-one, I have been the beneficiary of so much practical knowledge and hard-fought wisdom. I am at a loss at how to acknowledge so many people who have taught me so much.
One group I can acknowledge is the very generous reviewers of the manuscript for this book: Dana Anaby, PhD; Bill Carrigan, PhD; Emil Chiauzzi, PhD; Tabbetha Dobbins, PhD; Luke Holbrook, PhD; Angela Melkisethian; Michelle Mastro, MA; Lori Smith Okon, MS; Eric Schmieder, ME; Katrinka Somdahl-Sands, PhD; Carole Subotich, MD; Brenda Vrkljan, PhD, OT; Gerald Arnell Williams, MS; and others. They all provided valuable, detailed suggestions. Any shortcomings in the book, however, are mine, and do not reflect on them.
