Keeling Memorial Lectures and Colloquia at University College London, this series incorporates contributions from the Anglo-American philosophical tradition and from continental Europe, and brings together scholars internationally recognised for their work on ancient philosophy as well as those whose primary work in contemporary philosophy speaks of the importance of ancient philosophy in modern philosophical research and study. Each book in the series will appeal to upper-level and graduate students and academic researchers worldwide - both those who are interested in ancient philosophy and those who are working in the relevant areas of contemporary philosophy.

This volume contains nine of the ten Stanley Victor Keeling Memorial Lectures given at University College London in the years 1992-2002 inclusive.1 The tenth, given in 1999, was by Professor Myles Bumyeat of All Souls College, Oxford, on Plato and Aristotle on the Pleasures of Philosophy.
Stanley Victor Keeling (1894-1979) was Lecturer and then Reader in Philosophy at University College London; upon his retirement in 1954 he went to live in Paris, where he died in 1979.2 While his principal published works were on Descartes and McTaggart,3 he also taught ancient philosophy, and wrote of his desire to ensure that the study of Greek philosophy should assume in our university courses a position commensurate with its importance. It was with this in mind that, when an anonymous donor set up the endowment that funds the Keeling Lecture (and subsequently also the biennial Colloquia4 and a Scholarship) it was laid down that the subject of the Lecture should be ancient Greek philosophy. The inclusion in this volume of a lecture by Professor Jacques Brunschwig recognizes Keelings interest in France (he studied for his doctorate at the Universities of Toulouse and Montpellier, and lived in Paris after his retirement).
The lectures published or reprinted here have been arranged in the (approximate) chronological order of the topics covered, rather than in the order in which they were given. My thanks as editor are due to the lecturers, and to the publishers in the case of lectures published elsewhere, for permission to print or reprint the lectures. (Specific acknowledgements of permissions to reprint are given at the start of each lecture.) My thanks are also due to Ashgate Publishing for undertaking the publication of this volume and indeed of the Keeling Series in Ancient Philosophy, and to my colleagues in the Keeling Committee, Professor Gerard ODaly and Dr Bob Heinaman; Dr Heinaman has undertaken most of the work of inviting lecturers and organizing lectures in the period covered by this volume.
