The first compendium of all substance abuse treatment options with a focus on best practices

This is the first compendium of the entire range of options available for treating substance abuse, with a focus on effectiveness. The book synthesizes treatment approaches from medicine, psychology, sociology, and social work, and investigates regimens that range from brief interventions to the most intensive and expensive types of inpatient treatment programs. It examines controversies over best practices in substance treatment and closely analyzes current research findings and their applicability for improving substance abuse treatment in the future. Written for both academics and clinicians, the book translates complex research findings into an easily understandable format.

Substance Abuse Treatment examines the circumstances under which a treatment is considered effective and how effectiveness is measured. It discusses treatment goals and looks at the importance of client motivation in positive treatment outcomes. A great variety of inpatient and outpatient treatment options are examined, as are self-help programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous. This segues to a discussion of the changing role of self-help programs in treatment. The text also analyzes changes in the substance abuse treatment industry that make treatment more costly and less available to those without financial resources. It gives special attention to the treatment of diverse populations, those with co-occurring disorders, and criminal justice populations. National, state, and local prevention efforts are covered as well as substance abuse prevention and future issues in treatment. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate substance abuse courses in all relevant areas of study. In addition, it will be an important reference for substance abuse clinicians and other health professionals who treat patients with substance abuse issues.

CONTENTS
PREFACE

S ubstance abuse treatment in the United States is not a smooth continuum of services available to all those who seek them, and no definitive agreement exists regarding which treatment approaches offer clients the best chances of recovery. Substance Abuse Treatment: Options, Challenges, and Effectiveness is an effort to move the field of substance abuse studies forward by summarizing developments in treatment and examining treatment outcomes. The goal of this book is to provide a clear and succinct review of different types of treatment. Although this work primarily reviews what is known about each treatment type and best practices, it also sheds light on what is not yet known.

Substance Abuse Treatment: Options, Challenges, and Effectiveness synthesizes research in an effort to translate research findings into quality treatment approaches. This work emanates from my many years as a clinical practitioner working with substance abusers and addicts, as an instructor teaching collegelevel substance abuse courses, and as a member on the Advisory Board of the New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), a national effort to translate research findings into improved clinical practice.

, Treatment Goals: Abstinence and Harm Reduction, examines how and by whom treatment goals are formulated. It compares and contrasts abstinence and harm-reduction approaches in treating substance abuse and discusses the ethical and political considerations in harm reduction.

, The Substance Abuse Treatment Industry, examines the historical development of substance abuse treatment in the United States. It looks at the development of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in the early 1970s, the contributions of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA). It examines the cost-effectiveness of treatment and the extent to which the profit motive and availability of grant money determine the type of treatments that are available.

, Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment, reflects the fact that the majority of research has been on the effectiveness of outpatient types of programs, including brief intervention, individual and group therapy, and family therapy. In recent years, much emphasis has been placed on the counseling styles of motivational interviewing, contingency management, the community reinforcement approach, and adjunct therapies. This chapter reviews medications to treat addiction, including methadone, as well as the newer medications, such as acamprosate and buprenorphine.

, Treatment of Diverse Populations, addresses groups that have received less professional attention for their substance abuse problems. It examines the role of culture, race, and ethnicity in substance-using behavior. In addition, it addresses the substance use problems of and effectiveness of treatment for adolescents; women; the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population; those with HIV/AIDS; and older adults.

multiple settings. Substance abuse tends to be overlooked by the juvenile justice and criminal justice systems, yet promising approaches to treatment hold the potential for reduced recidivism and significant increases in cost savings. This chapter examines treatment for those on probation or parole, those in correctional therapeutic communities, and clients receiving treatment through drug courts.
