FOREWORD
"It is probably the best Louisiana Civil War book your Commission could reprint," advised Palmer Bradley of Houston, noted collector of rare books about the Confederacy and authority on Confederate matters generally. He was talking about Napier Bartlett's Military Record of Louisiana, and because his judgment was so obviously correct the Louisiana Civil War Centennial Commission readily agreed to underwrite the cost of making the book again available to the reading public. Among students of the war the book has long been known as a valuable source, an interesting personal document, and an exceedingly rare item, so much so that in recent years secondhand copies have been about impossible to obtain.
Although the book has been well known, knowledge about its author is relatively scanty. He was born in Macon, Georgia, the son of a physician, and came to New Orleans to study at the University of Louisiana, where he graduated in 1858. He went back to Georgia but in 1860 returned to New Orleans, apparently intending to make the city his permanent home. The records list him variously as a public school teacher, a lawyer, and a journalist, and it is possible that he dabbled in all three professions at the same time.
Thus Bartlett was in Louisiana when the Civil War began. He immediately enlisted, on May 26, 1861, in the elite Washington Artillery, joining as a private and going up later to corporal. As a member of this unit, he traveled to Virginia, where he would spend his war career. He served in some of the principal battles in the Eastern theater, although at intervals he was detailed to special duties in the quartermaster's department at Richmond. He saw a great

deal of the war at close range, and like so many sensitive young men of the time he wanted to write about what he had seen.
Apparently Bartlett had long felt an urge to write. At the conclusion of the war he returned to New Orleans and worked as a reporter for various newspapers. He finally purchased the Claiborne Advocate of Homer, and was editing that journal at the time of his death in 1876. In between journalistic ventures he tried his hand at writing fiction. Two volumes came from his penromantic and frothy productions that caused no more stir than they deserved. Much more satisfying to the author and more successful with the public was A Soldier's Story of the War, an engaging account of his own experiences. The reception accorded this work led Bartlett to prepare a larger one, the Military Record of Louisiana. In this book he incorporated his previous personal narrative and added a mass of information pertaining to the Washington Artillery and other units. The result was a volume combining autobiography and official data not readily available elsewhere. It was a contribution to both Louisiana and Confederate history, and as such it has had permanent significance and deserves to be read today.
The present volume is for the most part an exact reproduction of the book published in 1875 by L. Graham and Company, 73 Camp Street, New Orleans. In addition to this foreword, a table of contents has been added; photographs bound into the original volume have been omitted (they carried no identification), and a new title page has replaced the old. No attempt has been made to correct the typographical errors or to improve the unorthodox paging, which is evidence that although the various sections of the book were bound together they were printed separately.
