Can Gods existence be proven by logic? Are computers smart enough to follow rules or to cheat? What is an out-of-body experience? How can tables be solid when physicists say theyre made of subatomic particles that are only probability functions? Does science depend on trust? What is conscience? Does it come from God? From religious teaching? Social training? Is it rational to pursue your own self-interest? Can we all survive if we do this? In this collection of stories and dialogues Trudy Govier shows how these old and new philosophical questions arise, and offers imaginative and striking depictions of some of the theories and arguments they have inspired.

Preface
These dialogues and stories express my affection for the apparently imponderable questions of philosophy and my conviction that it can be both enlightening and entertaining to think about them.
Conversations with my husband Anton Colijn and our daughter Caroline were a major source of inspiration for a number of the selections here. I've also benefitted from the comments and encouragement of Helen Hooker, Bette Strang, Renate Weber, Mark Weinstein, and reviewers for Broadview Press.
Illustrations are done by Calgary freelance artist Ian Doig.

Can Computers Cheat?

Jan: How do you like the new computer game?
Picture 8
Robin: It's pretty good, but I'm not winning as much as I should. Well, I shouldn't complain at least it doesn't cheat. Shelley's computer starts to cheat her when she's won a few games in a row. Does she ever get mad!
Picture 9
Jan: What do you mean, it cheats?
Picture 10
Robin: It doesn't play fair. Shelley does everything right and then, just when she's about to win the game, her player falls down dead on the screen, for absolutely no reason. She loses even after making all the right moves, and does she get frustrated! The darn computer cheats!
Picture 11
Jan: Come on, get serious. Computers can't cheat. They aren't people they're only machines.
Picture 12
Robin: Well, Shelley has played a lot of games with that computer of hers, and she sure thinks it can cheat.
