Picture 8 1. Draw and paint on location, if you can.

Okay, sketching and painting on location is challenging. Everything is moving. People are watching. The water container just spilled. But its so worth the effort.

Working on location is powerful. When you draw and paint from direct observation, the energy of the experience flows into your sketch and infuses it with life. Sketching is not about a perfect representation of what you see, but about capturing your unique experience. When you work on location, youll see better and learn more. It keeps your sketch fresh, and it truly captures the moment in your heart and on paper.

Picture 10 2. Travel light.

To draw and paint on location, portable equipment is essential. Urban sketchers are amazingly industrious when it comes to gear on the go.

Think small and light. Try a portable stool with aluminum legs instead of steel. Use lightweight corrugated plastic to make a desktop that sits on your lap. Use travel brushes that keep the brush tip protected. Carry separate bags for dry materials (e.g., sketchbook, pencils, erasers) and another bag for wet materials (e.g., watercolors and brushes, pens and ink, etc.). Put everything in a lightweight bag or backpack that is secure and wont weigh you down.

Picture 11 3. Start small.

New to sketching? Start small! Its much less intimidating to fill a small piece of paper, and you wont get sidetracked drawing too much detail. Try a small pocket-sized sketchbook that you can carry with you, so you are ready the moment inspiration strikes!

Seattle-based sketcher and Urban Sketchers founder Gabi Campanario often carries a small sketchbook and a pensimple tools to quickly capture any scene.

Picture 13 4. Start with a simple subject.

On a trip to India some years back, I met one other person who was also sketching. She excitedly pulled out a tiny sketchbook filled with images such as the top of a palm tree and the face of a camelnot the grand architectural masterpieces I was working so hard to create.

In so many ways, she got it right. It wasnt about creating great works of art; it was about capturing the meaningful moments of her trip. Her sketches were every bit as important to her as mine were to me.

The lesson here: dont be overwhelmed by thinking you need to create great works of art. Start simple, as its all about capturing
