The Truth about Book Reviews

Life as an author is an adventure, and there is a lot we have to learn along the way. Certain tasks may seem simple at first, but are really more complex than we realized. Understanding how to get book reviews, what to do with them, and their importance can be especially difficult.

We believe book reviews are a crucial marketing tool, which is why it is our endeavor through this book to outline some tips to help authors understand book reviews. We are glad you have decided to pick up this book. We will keep it short and to the point, doing our best to help you separate the myths from the facts.

You may or may not know there are different ways to get reviews for your book. Some are honest and some are not. Before we dig in, we want to stress that if you go about getting reviews in the wrong way, it can cause serious ramifications. Thats why we believe getting honest reviews is so important.

We will cover that more in a bit, but lets go ahead and get started.

20 Book Review Myths, Debunked
Myth #1 - Book Reviews Arent Important

The Truth: Reviews Matter

Reviews are important and research has shown reviews do impact buying decisions. A research study conducted by Dimensional Research showed that 90% of customers reported reading positive reviews online impacted their buying decisions. In the same way, 86% of customers said reading negative reviews online impacted their buying decisions as well.

Tip : Make sure you dont ignore this important step of getting honest reviews for your book. They have more impact than you may realize.

Myth #2 - I Shouldnt Have to Ask for Book Reviews

The Truth: It is not only okay, but a good idea to ask for reviews.

If you are a new author, you might think asking someone to review your book is tacky or unprofessional. However, even big name traditional publishing houses have review programs for their books. Asking for reviews is a great marketing strategyand one that you should not overlook.

Tip : Ask at least 10 people to review your book. You can send a simple request via e-mail to your following or people you know, or even write a post to share on your Facebook page asking if anyone would be interested in receiving a free copy of your book in exchange for an honest review.

Myth #3 - All Reviewers Follow Through On-time Every-time

The Truth: Not every reader who received a review copy will post a review.

Understand that not all readers who agree to review your book will actually follow through. Dont take it personally as your reviewers are volunteers and have busy lives, but make sure to send at least one follow up e-mail message.

Tip : We have found that sending a follow-up message to reviewers who have not posted a review can double the response rate. Reviewers will sometimes forget or lose the links to post the review. They are busy just like us. Sending a simple reminder can make a huge difference.

Myth #4 - Reviews Dont Matter Outside of Amazon

The Truth: Having too few reviews can limit your book marketing options.

There are certain advertising opportunities you will miss out on if you do not have a minimum of 10 reviews. For example, Ereader News Today (ENT) has a bargain book of the day promotion they offer to authors. When our books are featured on ENT, we usually sell hundreds of copies, which we consider a success. However, your book needs a minimum of 10 reviews in order to even be considered for this promotion.

Tip : Make it your goal to get at least 10 reviews for your book.

Myth #5 Its a Sure Thing

The Truth: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

When soliciting reviews for your book, you are bound to come across companies or individuals who say they will write a 5-star review for your book for just XX amount of dollars. You need to know that you should never pay someone to review your book as it violates Amazons terms of service. Not to mention that paying for a positive review is unethical.

Tip: Never give anything in exchange for a review other than a free copy of your book.

Myth #6 You Will Only Get 5-Star Reviews

The Truth: Not everyone will love your book and that is okay.

Reading reviews can make or break your day. It is great to read through a new 5-star review where your book is praised, but not all reviews will make you smile. Someone, somewhere is bound to hate your book. It could be they prefer a different writing style, they disagree with something you wrote, or they could have a problem with the story itself.

The first thing you need to know is negative reviews are not directed at you as a person, they are simply someones opinion of your book. Not everyone will love your book or your writing style. It is just one hazard of putting your work out there.

Tip : Dont get bogged down by negative reviews. Read through to see if they gave any constructive criticism from which you could benefit, eat some chocolate, and then move on. You might also read through some positive reviews to remind yourself that someone does appreciate your writing.

Myth #7 Once Its Up, Youre Out of Luck

The Truth: You have a right to protect your books page from inappropriate remarks.

Not all reviews are relevant. Amazon has strict review guidelines that reviewers should follow when posting. If you come across a post that is promotional, off-topic, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate, you can report it to Amazon and they will delete it for you. They wont delete all reviews, but if they violate their terms of service, they usually are good about deleting them.

You can find Amazons review guidelines here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/community-help/customer-reviews-guidelines

Tip: Report any promotional, offensive, or otherwise irrelevant reviews to Amazon.

Tip : If a review does not violate Amazons terms, you can still vote it down with their voting buttons to have it show up lower on your books page. Vote good reviews up and bad reviews down.

Myth #8 - Whats Mine Is Yours

The Truth: You need permission to share a review in its entirety.

As an author, you need to know that reviews posted on Amazon are copyrighted. This means that you cannot copy a review written about your book and post it on your website, include it as an endorsement inside your book, or use it in your marketing without written permission from the original poster. However, because of the Fair Use Law, you can still use a review snippet from an Amazon review.

Tip: Review snippets are usually 1-2 sentences and should never include the majority of the posted review. You also need to credit the original author, and possibly even include a permalink back to the review on Amazons website.
