Introduction
This book is not an autobiography. I am not famous enough for one and much of my life is not that interesting. But some of it is. More importantly many of the stories that I will be telling you (in approximate chronological order) will not only be interesting (and sometimes juicy tell all stuff) but will often contain a lesson that might be useful to you. Or even to the world in general. Some chapters will not be biographical at all but rather simply explanations of numerous ideas that I have come up with over the years (some no doubt thought of by others as well.)
Who am I to think that I have dozens of thoughts that are both useful and often unique? Its a fluke. I had a father who was probably one of the smartest men in the world (Ill provide some evidence in the first chapter) who literally gave me a different logic puzzle or high school math lesson virtually every day, from age seven to twelve. And I had a father who had a son with three major flaws that made me veer very far from the path he hoped Id take with my life.
Those flaws were a boredom phobia, a hatred of doing things I didnt want to (eg wearing a tie or studying something uninteresting), and an inability to deal with physical discomfort, especially lack of sleep.
Given the above, it should not be surprising that when I realized that good money could be made from poker and other forms of gambling, I made my way to Las Vegas and became the black sheep of the family. (A family otherwise filled with Harvard graduates, authors and professors. See Jack Sklansky, Amy Sklansky, David A. Sklansky, Eddie Miller, Montana Miller, and several others.)
But this unusual history turned me into an unusual man. A high IQ guy who was taught math and logic at a very early age who, as a teenager, stopped thinking about academics but instead thought about scheming my way through the jungles of Las Vegas. The peculiar result, I believe, is a person who has the ability to come up with ideas that can be applied to you and/or the real world. Ideas that I hope will have you saying, Aha, of course. Why didnt I think of that?
NOTE: I expect the dates and incidents mentioned will occasionally be slightly inaccurate. However, those inaccuracies will never be of a relevant nature.
Chapter One: Dad
Sometime in 1950, my mother told my father (Irving Sklansky) he had to get a real job. He had a two-year-old son, a chance to make $100 a week working for a union pension fund, and was facing, as far as she was concerned, too much responsibility to accept the (temporarily) lower paying offer to teach math and logic at Harvard. His desire to do the right thing and please his wife, caused him to make a decision that he would always regret. Because he was born to teach. In going over his papers after he died, I found much evidence of his talents including, going all the way back to 1938 when he was fourteen years old, when his high school (where he had skipped two grades) wrote his aptitude in performing and explaining the subject matter (math) is astounding and inspiring.
