Introduction
Old English classical prose may lay claim to an importance and distinction equal to that of Old English poetry, but whereas the latter is the subject of enthusiastic study, the former, and much larger, corpus has suffered neglect. The annual bibliographies of the Modern Language Association, for example, list only a few articles on the major prose writers of the period over the last several years, and many of these are limited to a study of source material. Ker's Catalogue may be an eloquent witness to the influence and importance of Aelfric, yet in modern times there has appeared but one critical book on his achievement. The Clemoes-Godden critical edition of the Catholic Homilies, sure to become standard, has not yet seen print, and Pope's Supplementary Series is only now beginning to have influence.
An important subject, demanding interdisciplinary study, reasonably requires that scholars from various disciplines, who are united in their concern with developing the subject, collaborate in a joint attempt to show its importance and to stimulate interest in its study. The present collection of original essays responds to this demand as a contemporary contribution to an understanding of the Old English homily and the masterly achievement of Aelfric. The first essays provide the background necessary to evaluation through study of the historical, ecclesiastical, and literary contexts which permitted and encouraged the flourishing of prose in the late tenth century. The latter essays deal with the literature itself through functional study of style and structure, structure, and theme, while employing source criticism, descriptive analysis, and comparison. Such issues as the relationship of prose and poetry, the importance of the Latin tradition both in form and content, the question of originality, and the concept of
