Editor's Introduction
Francisco Morales Padrn
The age in which Don Francisco Saavedra de Sangronis lived was one of the most interesting in the history of Spain and of the world because in it lay the foundations of modern times. This Sevillano lived from the middle of the eighteenth century (he was born in 1746, the same year as Goya) through the first two decades of the nineteenth (he died in 1819). He was thus a contemporary of Cabarrs, Jovellanos, Cavanillas, Olavide, Feijo, O'Reilly, Juan Bautista Muoz, Cadalso, Aranda, Campomanes, Glvez, Floridablanca, and four kings descending from Ferdinand VI to Ferdinand VII, with Charles III and Charles IV in between, and of Pitt, Catherine II, Clement VIII, Napoleon, Clive, Voltaire, Schiller, Mozart, Goethe, Hegel, Marie Antoinette, Malthus, Joseph II, Frederick II, Cook, Bougainville, Kergulen, Sir Walter Scott, Beethoven, Chateaubriand, Mme de Stal, Goldsmith, and Humboldt. These Europeans watched the liquidation of their nations' American empires and saw the dawn of a new Europe, especially of a new Spain. Spain began in 1808 a chaotic era in which its empire was lost. It would not end until 1868 with the deposition of Isabella II.
