As with most of the worlds wonders, many said the Golden Gate Bridge could never be built the span was too wide, the ocean too deep, and the cost too great. In 1872, railroad tycoon Charles Crocker conceived the idea, but it took a visionary engineer, Joseph Strauss, to put forth a realistic proposal in 1921. After 10 years of opposition, funding was finally secured. The bridge opened in 1937, and has been an emblem of San Francisco, and Americas icon on the Pacific, ever since.
For a uniquely powerful view of the bridge while enjoying a Sunday champagne brunch, opt for one of the many cruises on the Bay, departing from the Embarcadero Pier and Sausalito. Quality purveyors are Hornblower Cruises (415 438-8300, www.hornblower.com ), and Call of the Sea/Seaward (415 331-3214, www.callofthesea.org ).
Deco Style
The bridge owes its striking style to the consulting architect Irving F. Morrow. He simplified the pedestrian railings to uniform posts placed far enough apart to allow for unobstructed, breathtaking views.

Bridge Celebrations
The bridge opened on May 27, 1937, with some 200,000 pedestrians. Fifty years later, the ritual was repeated. On May 27, 2012, the 75th anniversary of the opening was marked.
Fort Point Lookout
This National Historic Site was completed in 1861. It offers soaring views of the underside of the bridge and of the pounding waters of the ocean.

Toll System
Since 1937, cars have had to pay a toll to cross the bridge. Now, only city-bound traffic is charged, and in 2013 the system was made fully electronic in order to ease the traffic congestion from stopping at toll booths.
Maintenance
Repairing and painting the bridge is an ongoing task. The paint protects it from the high salt content in the air, which corrodes the steel components.

Protective Barriers
The Golden Gate Bridge is the number-one spot in the world for suicides. As yet there have been no barriers effective enough to prevent this, but there are bars in place for general safety.
Building the Bridge
Strauss introduced the use of hard hats and a safety net that saved 19 workers lives.

Hiking and Biking
Every visitor should walk or cycle across at least part of the bridge.
Marin Vista Point
Crossing from the side, pull off just before the end to take in the startling panorama from the Vista Point and look back at the hills and spires of the city.
THE STATISTICS
The length of the steel wires used to make the cables of the bridge is enough to circle the earth three times. It is also brilliantly over-engineered and is said to be five times stronger than it needs to be to withstand the winds and tides it endures daily. At the time it was built, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world (it now ranks ninth) and took just over four years to build. About 40 million vehicles cross the bridge annually, streaming across six lanes of traffic, along its 1.7-mile (2.7-km) length. The bridge is equipped with two foghorns, each with a different pitch, and 360-degree flashing red beacons. The bridge has been closed due to high winds only three times in its history.
CABLE CARS
Its impossible not to love these vestiges of another age, as they valiantly make their way up the precipitous hills. Yet they came perilously close to being scrapped in 1947, when a progressive mayor announced it was time for buses to take their place. An outraged citizenry prevailed, and the system was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964. In the early 1980s, it underwent a $60 million overhaul. The present service of about 40 cars covers some 10 miles (16 km).
