Foreword
The choice of essays to be included in this volume was my own and the editing has consisted principally of bringing the footnotes into a consistent form; the reader must remember that these essays were written over a period of three decades and published in various places. When the collection was first assembled, minor inconsistencies in style were evident throughout, the natural consequence of such a varied publishing history. Stylistic changesin capitalization, in punctuation, in paragraphingwere made for the sake of uniformity by the editorial staff of Vanderbilt University Press, who also made minor, clarifying changes in the wording of one or two essays. This was done with the approval of the author; in no case has a change involved emphasis or meaning.
To bring uniformity to the footnotes has required time and a certain amount of care, but it was not difficult; in fact, it was a pleasant undertaking, since it afforded me an insight into Green the scholar such as I would never have gained otherwise. But the essay on Green was not easy to write. How does one write about his mentor, a person for whom he has great respect and affection? After many rewritings, the essay must stand as written; it is my own, it was written honestly, and I accept responsibility for it.
My debts are many. Most of all, I am indebted to Professor and Mrs. Green for their cooperation and especially to Professor Green for making available the two previously unpublished essays. Dewey W. Grantham, Jr., of Vanderbilt University, offered encouragement from the beginning, and his support of my efforts never diminished. Mrs. Pattie McIntyre and Mrs. Phyllis Andrews, of the University of North Carolina Library staff, were of

invaluable help with the footnotes; William S. Powell, Lawrence F. London, Miss Anna Brooke Allan, Mrs. Carolyn Wallace, and Clyde N. Wilson, Jr.all of the library staff and the latter three from my departmentoffered valuable suggestions on more than one occasion. Edwin A. Miles, of the University of Houston; Hugh F. Rankin, of Tulane University; Clifton L. Hall, of the University of Tennessee; and Ernest W. Hooper, of Middle Tennessee State University, have, with patience and interest, talked with and listened to me as we discussed ideas and polished phrases for inclusion in the essay on Green. Finally, I want to thank Miss Martha I. Strayhorn, Assistant Editor of Vanderbilt University Press, and to say that it was a joy to work with her.
