Although Schoenberg ultimately never signed a contract with any firm to publish this volume, Newlin moved forward with the translation of his texts.
The current volume, Schoenbergs Program Notes and Musical Analyses, does not replicate Schoenbergs Program Notes project. Rather, inspired by Schoenbergs belief that the book should inform and educate an audience, this volume is a compilation of the vast array of informative and analytical statements Schoenberg made about his own compositions. His insights emerge not only in traditional program notes but also from a variety of sources, including letters, sketch materials, pre-concert talks, public lectures, contributions to scholarly journals, newspaper articles, radio broadcasts, interviews, pedagogical materials, and publicity fliers. While many of the texts were chosen for this volume because they elucidate specific compositions, other items resonate with the general principle of program notes, expounding on Schoenbergs compositional process or his views on modern composition in general. Furthermore, because of the importance of the radio as means of transmitting Schoenbergs ideas, radio broadcasts of a more general and less technical nature are also included. Taken as a whole, these writings and statements call attention to Schoenbergs ongoing initiative to enlarge his listening publicindividuals who would want to know his music and thought intimately.

For further discussion of the proposed Program Notes volume, see Julia Bungardt, Nur wo es sich um Wahrung hherer Kunstinteressen handelt, soll polemisch Stellung genommen werden: Arnold Schnberg verffentlich in Zeitung und Zeitschriften, in Arnold Schnberg in seinen Schriften. Arnold Schoenberg to Dika Newlin, March 18, 1950, E.o. LC. In a letter to the editor of Whos Who in Music sent on Schoenbergs behalf dated March 14, 1950, Richard Hoffmann suggested that Schoenberg had already published two collections of essays: Style and Idea and Program Notes. E.o. LC.

Arnold Schoenberg to Dika Newlin, March 3, 1951, E.o. LC.
A greatly expanded version of Style and Idea appeared in English in 1975, edited by Leonard Stein, but very few of Schoenbergs program notes and analyses appeared in that volume. According to a November 7, 1967, letter from Leonard Stein to Claudio Spies, there was once again the intention to publish a second volume of Schoenbergs writings, dedicated to analyses of his own works, but this plan never came to fruition either. E.o. Gertrud Schoenberg Collection, ASC.
I wish to express my deep appreciation to the many people who contributed to bringing this project fruition. First and foremost, I thank Nuria Schoenberg Nono, Lawrence Schoenberg, and Ronald Schoenberg for their generous support, and for granting permission to reprint Schoenbergs text and music manuscripts. Therese Muxender, Eike Fess, Eike Rathgeber, and Julia Bungardt of the Arnold Schnberg Center answered many questions, providing the benefit of their expertise. The series editors, Sabine Feisst and Severine Neff, selflessly gave of their time to refine and improve the manuscript. Suzanne Ryan of Oxford University Press remained immensely supportive throughout. Jessen OBrien, Adam Cohen, Andrew Maillet, Mary Jo Rhodes, and Molly Morrison answered countless inquiries, making the process go as smoothly as possible.
