The equine hoof is a complex marvel of natural engineering, built to withstand tremendous forces and able to adapt to an astonishing range of environmental conditions. It also changes dailyfor better or for worsein response to external and internal factors. Few horse owners have the opportunity to acquire a deep understanding of the hoof, which limits their ability to advocate on their horses behalf and make informed decisions about hoof care and management. This book is the first resource of its kind to combine the most current and useful information available, gleaned from the research and wisdom of top hoof experts around the world, with a unique hands-on approach. The authors provide basic terms and anatomy, clearly illustrate the differences between healthy and unhealthy feet, discuss biomechanics and management concerns, and cover the causes, treatments, and prevention of commonly encountered problems, including laminitis, white line disease, and thrush. Along the way, readers are given activities to help them better analyze and understand the most important aspects of equine hoof health, such as hoof balance, depth of sole, and point of breakover. Easytofollow language, over 400 fullcolor photographs, and doityourself exercises promise to empower horse owners and caretakers of all experience levels with the tools they need to accurately assess hoof health and keep their horses as sound and happy as possible.

Contents
Foreword

Ihave studied and worked with the horses foot for more than 50 years, and I continue to participate in research projects focused on treating and preventing equine lameness. Through the articles and book chapters Ive had published over the years, and via clinics and seminars I have given, I have sought to share as much of my knowledge as possible with both hoof care professionals and horse people in general. Always the intention has been to improve the life of the domestic horse through educated care of the hoof.

But there has remained a need for a complete resource for those who have not spent years studying the equine foot, whether they be horse owners, trainers, veterinary or farriery students, or anyone else who wants an easy-to-grasp guide to hoof management, anatomy, function, and the many things that can, for one reason or another, go wrong with the equine foot. The Essential Hoof Bookfulfills that need, bringing the most up-to-date understanding and research to every horse person, in a practical and highly readable format clarified with hundreds of enlightening photographs and illustrations. Once youve read The Essential Hoof Book, you will have a much deeper understanding of the horses hoof and how to keep it healthy and sound in ways you perhaps never thought ofor thought possible.

Between the covers of this book, you will also find in-depth discussion of two important issues (among many others) that have been debated for years, until now providing little clarity. First is the issue of mismatched feet and how to managethem rather than change them. Second is long-toe/low-heel syndrome, which is present in an alarming number of domestic horses, with devastating health and performance consequences.
